Lions clinch R30 million Sponsorship deal

The Super 14 Lions have secured a sponsorship of more than R30 million over the next three years.

The naming rights sponsorship, brokered by Primedia and Megapro who brought the parties together, was announced by Leon Vermaak, the CEO of leading short-term insurer, Auto & General, at a function in Johannesburg on Monday night.

There is a performance clause attached to the sponsorship, and incentive bonuses form part of the sponsorship.

“Lions coach Eugene Eloff and the Lions captain Ernest Joubert both feel that the Lions will finish in the top half of this year’s competition,” Vermaak said – and from that it can be gathered that this is the target set for the 2008 season.

He said that Auto and general are proud to be associated with the Super 14 Lions as they embody what the company belies have been the key ingredients in their success: a positive attitude, teamwork, passion, commitment, perseverance and a healthy competitive spirit.

“Through this sponsorship, we can demonstrate our commitment to supporting South African sport,” Vermaak said. Speaking on behalf of Lions Rugby, their president, Prof. Jannie Ferreira, said that they did not view this as merely a sponsorship.

“We view our sponsors as partners, and therefore look forward to a great partnership over the next three years,” he said.
