Johannesburg based Super Rugby franchise the Lions are facing a potential injury crisis at hooker after victory over the Stormers last Saturday.

Malcolm Marx and Julian Redelinghuys were both injured in this Super Rugby clash which leaves the Lions with problems at hooker.

The Lions’ other hooker Robbie Coetzee is also out of action, leaving Armand van der Merwe as the #Lions’ only specialist option left in the number two jersey in their initial #SuperRugby squad.

“The negative is the injuries. I am obviously concerned about Malcolm and Julian. The other guys will probably be bumps and bruises. But those two – to lose Julian in the third minute was a big setback for us, and obviously Malcolm as well, as he is in tremendous form. That is the nervous time for us, waiting to see what the result will be,” said Lions coach Johan Ackermann.

“Malcolm has a neck injury and Julian has a wrist injury and both were in discomfort.

“If I could have showed you my plan, it was to rotate a number of guys next week. It was probably a week too late unfortunately for Julian and Malcolm and hopefully those injuries are not too bad but if they had come through this week they would have had the break they needed.

“That is part of the game, we will have to find another hooker if Malcolm is out, because Robbie Coetzee is still out for a while. That is where we have to trust our squad, our juniors and hopefully those guys will make the step up.”

The Lions sit five points clear of the Africa 2 Conference after recording five wins from their first seven games.
