Johannesburg based Super Rugby franchise the Lions have suffered a severe blow for their Super Rugby title hopes as Warren Whiteley will most likely miss the rest of the Super Rugby season.
Lions captain Whitely injured his right AC joint (shoulder) playing for the Springboks against Ireland and an MRI scan on Monday confirmed a grade III injury.
Whiteley saw a specialist on Tuesday who confirmed that he does not need surgery but that he will be sidelined for six weeks.
Super Rugby resumes this weekend and there are three regular season rounds remaining and three play off rounds.
It’s certain that without a miracle Whiteley will miss the regular season rounds but could return for the final play off round should the Lions make it that far.
A statement from the Lions has confirmed that in Whiteley’s absence Jaco Kriel will captain the side.
