The new Lions side ran in eight tries in Welkom on Friday afternoon to clock up a confidence boosting 54-7 victory in a compulsory friendly against the Griffons.

The Lions scored five goals before the break to lead 35-0 at the break with Herkie Kruger converting all five first-half tries.

The Lions were aided by poor first-time tackling by the Griffons in the first half but would take confidence that both wingers, Dusty Noble and Johan Jackson, scored braces with Franco van der Merwe also chipping in with two.

A number of changes by the Griffons at the break leveled the playing field, and with Enrico Swartz replacing Clayton Gawie at scrumhalf, the Griffons managed to regain some momentum after the break.

There was nothing spectacular about the Lions’ performance, with Van der Merwe the pick of the pride and new lock Nico Luus brilliant in the lineouts.

Lions scrumhalf Jano Vermaak immediately injected some pace in the second half, but with a number of changes the visitors clearly lost rhythm and the match ended in a dull affair.

The Lions’ set pieces were okay and it probably was a perfect trial run for the Currie Cup.

But it was also evident that they would need more man power to hunt with the big dogs.
