Lions to tour without captain Joubert

Lions captain Ernst Joubert is to undergo a shoulder operation on Friday and has therefore not been included in the Super 14 squad for the five-match tour of Australasia.

Cobus Grobbelaar will take over the captaincy for the tour.

The Xerox Lion’ Vodacom Cup captain and flank Wilhelm Koch has been selected in Joubert’s place.

The side that drew their Super 14 match against the Reds on Saturday, with the exception of Joubert, has been selected as well as Koch, lock Dewald Senekal, prop Eugene Maqwelana, centre Doppies le Grange and centre/wing Justin St Jerry.

Flyhalf Louis Strydom was not considered because of injury.

The Lions, who have a bye this weekend, have a tour that sees them fly via Australia for two matches in New Zealand, return to Australia for their next two matches and then return to New Zealand for their last match.

On tour, the Lions play the Highlanders (April 4), Crusaders (April 12), the Waratahs (April 19) and the Brumbies (April 25) and the Hurricanes (May 3).

Their first match after their return is the following weekend when they play the Chiefs at Ellis Park on May 10.
