Lions beat Crusaders in Johannesburg

The first of two Super Rugby quarter finals in South Africa on Saturday is in Johannesburg where the Lions host the Crusaders.

The Lions kick off and the match is underway.

The Crusaders clear the ball into touch.

2.00: The Lions win the line out and Courtnal Skosan races down the wing and scores in the corner. TRY!

2.45: Elton Jantjies takes the conversion kick from out wide but misses.

4.00: Faf de Klerk snipes up the same wing and offloads to Skosan and they run the ball to the 4m line where the Lions win a penalty. Kieran Read is down injured and is getting help from the medics.

5.00: Jantjies kicks to the corner with the penalty.

6.00: The Lions win the line out and use the maul. Luke Romano is yellow carded for “swimming up the side of the maul”

7.00: The Lions work the ball to the line and after several goes Rohan Janse Van Rensburg goes over to score. However their may have been a knock on. TMO review. Marius Jonker the TMO decides that the ball was not clearly knocked on so the try can be awarded. TRY !

8.00: Jantjies takes the conversion and nails it.

9.00: After a Crusaders knock on the scrum has to be reset. When it is the Lions win the ball and attack. Jantyjies chips ahead and Janse van Rensburg chases, catches the ball and gets the Lions into the Crusaders 22 where he knocks on in the tackle.

12.00: The Crusaders win the scrum in their 22 and they pass back to Israel Dagg who puts the ball into touch.

13.00: Penalty to the Lions at the ruck – going off the feet. Jantjies will have a shot at the posts.

14.00: Jantjies takes the kick and nails it. Ten points so far while Romano has been in the bin.

16.00: The Crusaders work the ball down to the Lions 22. The Lions will have a 5 man line out. Romano is back on. The Crusaders win the line out and run at the Lions. They go wide – too wide as the ball goes into touch.

18.00: Crusaders win the line out and run at the Lions on their 22. They go wide but the Lions slow the attack. The Crusaders change sides. They keep the ball moving and change sides again. Penalty to the Crusaders. Mo’unga will have a shot at the posts.

19.00: Mo’unga nails the kick and the Crusaders are on the board.

21.00: The Crusaders go through 7 phases on attack and they win a penalty. Mo’unga kicks to the corner.

22.00: Crusaders much more into the game now. McNicholl almost gets through to score but he is caught. At the breakdown the Crusaders get the put in for the scrum.

24.00: The Crusaders drive over the line but they are held up. 5m scrum.

25.00: Crusaders win the scrum and Read goes for the line , loses the ball in the tackle and the Lions win a penalty. The Lions clear.

26.00: The Lions win the line out and after a couple of phases they kick deep. The Crusaders go through two phases and kick for touch. The Crusaders are keeping the Lions pinned in their half.

28.00: The Lions win the ball from the line out and use the maul. When that slows they go to the backs who kick and chase.

29.00: The Crusaders get the ball and press the Lions back to their 5m line where the Lions turn the ball over and kick so the Crusaders start the attack all over again.

30.00: The Crusaders go wide to Dagg who back hand passes and the ball goes into touch.

32.00: Crusaders on attack again after a scrum. Its been all the Crusaders for the last 15 minutes. The Crusaders get the ball to the 5m line after 7 phases and Ryan Crotty goes for the line and hits the base of the post and scores. TRY!

33.00: Mo’unga slots the conversion and the Crusaders are right back in this.

36.00:Jaco Kriel goes on the attack for the Lions. He makes ground and is tackled and the Crusaders knock on.

38.00:Penalty from the scrum to the Lions. Jantjies kicks for touch.

39.00: The Lions win the line out and drive over the line. The TRY is awarded – Ref Joubert get down on his knees to see if the try was scored. He thinks he has seen the ball on the ground. Malcolm Marx is the try scorer.

40.00: After the siren sounds Jantjies takes the conversion kick and nails it.

Its half time.

The half time score was Lions 22 Crusaders 10 

The Crusaders kick off and the second half is underway.

41.00: Mitchell Drummond has replacedAndy Ellis. The Lions win a penalty. They take the line out option.

42.00: The Lions win the line out but the Crusaders turn the ball over and attack. Faf de Klerk lunges forward for an intercept – a second one is as many minutes  and he knocks on.

44.00: The Crusaders win the scrum and run the ball into the Lions 22.

45.00; The Crusaders start gaining momentum as they work the ball from side to side and they win a penalty. Mo’unga will have a shot.

46.00: Mo’unga slots the penalty and the Crusaders trail by 9.

51.00: The Lions have a scrum on their 22. They win the scrum and boot the ball over the try-line. Dagg dots the ball down. 22 drop.

53.00: The Lions go on the attack in the Crusaders half – Jantjies goes for the drop goal and nails it.

54.00: The Lions make a mark and kick deep. The Crusaders begin their attack from their half and after a couple of phases they kick. The ball goes back and forth and the game is stopped due to an injury.

57.00; Penalty to the Lions from the scrum. They ran the ball and were called back after a forward pass.

59.00:  Scott Barrett has come on for Sam Whitelock. The Lions are gowing in attack. They work the ball to the Crusaders 22 – they have the advantage and chip ahead but get called back for a peanlty.

61.00: Jantjies takes the peanlty kick and nails it.

62.00: Out of nothing the Crusaders split the Lions defence and Mo’unga offloads to Mitchell Drummond who scores under the posts. Craig Joubert calls in the TMO to review the try. Replays show no knock on. TRY !

63.00: Mo’unga adds the conversion.

64.00: The Lions look to counter attack. They go through the phases on the attack and get into the Crusaders 22 but the ball goes into touch. The Crusaders win the line out and clear.

65.00 The Lions take the line out quickly and De Klerk kicks deep – too deep as the ball goes into touch.

66.00: Both teams enjoy a break out – it’s loose attack from either side but the ball finally goes into touch.

68.00: The Crusaders win a line out – they run the ball but Lionel Mapoe gets the ball and slips through – he offloads to Ruan Combrinck who runs in to score. TRY!

Jantjies adds the conversion.

70.00: Johnny McNicholl loses the ball into touch giving the Lions a line out. After they win a line out the Lions are given a penalty for interfering with the halfback. Harsh though as the replay shows he wasnt. Jantjies takes the penalty shot but misses.

73.00: The Lions get into space and Ross Cronje gets away. He stumbles before the line but gets up and scores. TRY!

74.00:The conversion is added by Jantjies.

77.00: The Crusaders get a free kick from the scrum. they tap it and run.

79.00: The Crusaders work the ball to the Lions 5m line. They continue to attack and then knock on. The Lions turn the ball over and run it. They too knock on.  Ben Volavola scores in the corner for the Crusaders.

80.00: The conversion is missed.

81.00: Penalty to Crusaders. They run the ball but the Lions turn the ball over and kick it out.

The Lions have won.
