Hurricanes beat Lions in Johannesburg

on

The Lions have played the Hurricanes 20 times in Super Rugby since 1998, the Lions have won four matches and lost 16 times.

The Lions’ four wins give them a record of winning 20% of their matches against the Hurricanes regardless of venue.

  • The Hurricanes have won nine of their last 10 matches against the Lions (L1), their only loss in that time coming in the 2017 Super Rugby Semi-Final (29-44).
  • The Joburg franchise has won 10 of their last 12 Super Rugby games on home turf, including their last three on the bounce.
  • The Hurricanes have won their last four away games on the bounce in Super Rugby; the last time they won more was a six-game streak in their first six away games of 2015.
  • The Lions and the Rebels are the only two teams with a success rate of 90% or higher at both the lineout (90%) and scrum (93%) this Super Rugby campaign.
  • Ardie Savea won a round-high six turnovers in Round 16 to take his season tally to 22, the most of any player in Super Rugby 2019.

In the meantime, why not have a look at the match preview.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, the City of Gold.

2.00: Shaun Reynolds goes too high into contact and is held up by several Hurricanes. Scrum to the visitors on halfway.

4.00: The Canes go wide, but Ben Lam is turned over. Reynolds carries before Andries Coetzee kicks the ball back to the tourists. Ngani Laumape takes the ball into contact and it is his turn to be held up. Scrum to the Lions just outside their 22.

5.00: Good scrum by the Canes, but it is still Lions ball because both front rows went up at the same time.

6.00: Superb kick by Coetzee, pinning the visitors inside their 22. The Lions carried but lost 25 metres as they were tackled back behind the gain-line.

7.00: Smith gets caught on the wrong side of a ruck. Jordie Barrett clears to halfway.

7.00: TRY! Laumape takes breaks Harold Vorster’s weak tackle and races past Coetzee to score next to the poles. James Marshall, in for Beauden Barrett at flyhalf, put Laumape through the hole from the lineout. 0-5

8.00: CONVERSION! Jordie Barrett adds the extras. 0-7

10.00: TRY! The Lions hit back through Aphiwe Dyantyi. The winger spotted a gap and put in a chip-kick behind Lam and Barrett. Lam got to the ball first, but he knocked it back past Barrett. Dyantyi beat TJ Perenara to the ball to score his fifth try of the season. 5-7

11.00: CONVERSION! Reynolds levels. 7-all

14.00: The Lions have a scrum inside their 22, which Reynolds clears.

15.00: Chase Tiatia cleans up behind his goal-line, races forward and clears with his left foot to the 22.

16.00: The Hurricanes get penalised at the lineout. Malcolm Marx opts for a kick to the corner.

17.00: Marx crashes over the try-line, but Jaco Peyper says the hooker is held up by Gareth Evans.

19.00: A scuffle breaks out after the reset scrum. The Lions go wide, attacking with pick-and-drives, but the attack dies. However, the home side win another penalty and opt for poles.

21.00: PENALTY! Reynolds puts the hosts in front. 10-7

23.00: Smith wins the turnover, inside his 22, Ross Cronje clears behind the retreating Barrett. Barrett gathers and clears back to the Lions. Swys de Bruin’s men use the ball patiently before Reynolds clears to his 10m.

27.00: Smith has left the field with a hamstring injury.

28.00: The Hurricanes are huffing and puffing in the opening half-hour, but they have had most of the last 10 minutes’ play.

30.00: The Lions keep getting tackled back behind the gain-line, which leads to them kicking the ball back to the visitors’ dangerous runners.

31.00: Dyantyi is tackled out by the corner flag after Marx was put through a hole by Reynolds. Lineout to the Hurricanes.

32.00: Marvin Orie plays his opposite number in the air, which releases the pressure on the New Zealanders.

34.00: John Plumtree’s side has done well defensively, stopping the Lions at the breakdown.

36.00: Another penalty at the ruck goes against the hosts. Barrett clears.

38.00: Aphiwe Dyantyi gets back and cleans up Laumape’s grubber. It takes the Lions a few phases before they can clear. Dyantyi looked to have knocked on, but Peyper let him play on.

39.00: Penalty to the visitors at yet another ruck. Barrett calls for the tee.

40.00: PENALTY! Barrett splits the uprights from 25 metres out and levels. 10-all

42.00: A comedy of errors ends the opening stanza.

The halftime score was Lions 10 Hurricanes 10

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway on the Highveld.

41.00: TRY! Lam picks up the bouncing ball after the Lions botch the kick-off, and waltzes in for the try. Easy as you like. Smith, off injured, would usually be patrolling the space behind the jumpers, so Lam found himself with all the time in the world. 10-15

42.00: CONVERSION! Barrett slots the kick. 10-17

44.00: The Lions are inside the Canes’ 22.

45.00: Ardie Savea – who else? – wins the penalty at the breakdown. He has only been on for four minutes, too. Savea won six turnovers at the breakdown last weekend against the Sharks, and he has started hot.

46.00: Jeff Toomaga-Allen leaves the field, on comes Ross Geldenhuys.

47.00: PENALTY! Barrett extends the lead to 10 points with his second penalty-goal. 10-20

49.00: TRY! Lam has another try after taking Ardie Savea’s inside ball on the touchline and burning the cover defenders to score. Lam’s swivel in midfield sent Savea away before combining in support to take the game away from the Lions. 10-25

50.00: MISS! The kick is no good. 10-25

52.00: NO TRY! Coetzee thinks he’s scored, but the TMO rules the five-pointer void because of obstruction.

54.00: Penalty to the Lions. Elton Jantjies kicks to the corner.

55.00: Laumape wins the penalty at the breakdown for not releasing.  Barrett clears to the 10m.

59.00: TRY! Jantjies and Lionel Mapoe combine to put Dyantyi away for his second try.

60.00: CONVERSION! Reynolds retains the kicking duties, making no mistake. 17-25

64.00: Hacjivah Dayimani wins a critical turnover penalty after a 10-phase attack inside his 22.

65.00: TRY! Dane Coles scores in the corner. Hacjivah Dayimani is lucky to not see yellow after a high tackle in the build-up on Perenara. 17-30

66.00: CONVERSION! Barrett slots the sideline kick. 17-32

69.00: The Lions survive. Barrett almost finished off the game, then Du’Plessis Kirifi was tackled short.

71.00: NO TRY! Laumape crashes over from close range, but the TMO chalks off the try for a double placement. 17-32

74.00: Tyrone Green save the Lions’ blushes, cleaning up inside his goal-line and racing out. He clears, but the Canes keep coming.

76.00: TRY! Coles has a double, now. He breaks off the driving maul and reaches out to score. 17-37

77.00: MISS! The kick is wide. 17-37

79.00: Time is slowly running out on the Lions’ season.

81.00: The hooter sounds; the ball is out: game over!
