Lions beat Jaguares in Johannesburg

The Lions, last year’s Super Rugby finalists, kicked off their campaign, with a win, last week at home against the Sharks.

The Lions delivered a solid performance while the Jaguares made a slow start, in a loss, to the Stormers.

  • This will be the fifth meeting between these teams, with the previous four each being won by the home team on the day.
  • There have been 30 tries scored in the four previous meetings between these sides with the South African outfit accounting for 18 of these.
  • The Jaguares have won two of their last three games away from home, having lost 11 of their previous 13 games on the road (W2).
  • The Lions won their opener last weekend against the Sharks, they are aiming to win their opening two fixtures for the third season in a row.
  • The Jaguares have won twice in South Africa, beating the Cheetahs in 2016 and the Kings in 2017.

9.00: The Lions, running from their own half, lose the ball forwards and the visitors get the scrum in an attacking part of the field, 15 metres in from touch.

11.00: The Lions set up another driving maul, and yet again, the Jaguares stop the drive. However, they win the ball and lose it forward. Scrum to the Lions, five-metres out.

14.00: Harold Vorster is penalised for hands in the ruck. Agustin Creevy throws deep but it is skew and gathered by the Lions.

15.00: The Jaguares turn the ball over. Good defence.

16.00: A tap-and-go by Ross Cronje starts a counter-attack, unfortunately, the ball is lost into touch, and the move breaks down.

17.00: The Lions are penalised. Boffelli, from 49 metres out, will take a shot at goal.

18.00: PENALTY! It’s good from the winger. 0-10

19.00: Another turnover at the ruck by the Jaguares turns defence into attack. The Lions are not committing men to the breakdown and the visitors are snapping up the loose ball.

20.00: The move breaks down after another unforced error by the Argentinians.

23.00: The Jaguares are pinged for offsides. Aphiwe Dyantyi made the initial break which led to the penalty. However, the lineout is lost. Warren Whitely saves the day with a tackle which has led to a Lions’ scrum on the Jags’ 5.

24.00: Big scrum by the South Americans as they win the penalty.

26.00: MASSIVE scrum, this time by the Lions, leads to a penalty.

27.00: TRY! Dyantyi is over for his second try in as many games. The winger steps off his left foot and cuts between Felipe Arregui and Sanchez to score. 5-10

28.00: MISS! Jantjies can’t add the extras, but the Lions have halved the deficit. 5-10

32.00: The Lions are going through the phases, but some good defending is holding them out.

33.00: YELLOW CARD and PENALTY TRY! Bautista Delguy deliberately knocked down Whiteley’s pass. 12-10

33.00: That is an outrageous decision from referee Jaco Peyper and TMO Willie Vos.

36.00: A couple of reset scrums. It could have been a penalty for the Jaguares after Arregui popped Ruan Dreyer.

39.00: TRY! Andries Coetzee crashes over after Lionel Mapoe’s wonderful offload. The centre sucked in two defenders before sending the fullback away. 17-10

41.00: CONVERSION! Jantjies finds his range. 19-10

47.00: TRY! Sylvian Mahuza is sent away after a great run by Dyantyi. It came from a strong scrum inside the Lions half. 24-10

49.00: CONVERSION! Jantjies makes no mistake; he’s found his range. 26-10

50.00: Dreyer is caught offsides and the Jaguares get the penalty. Sanchez will take a shot at goal.

51.00: PENALTY! Sanchez halves the deficit. 26-13

52.00: TRY! Dyantyi is in for his second after a counter-attack inside the Lions’ 22. The winger races away for a 60-metre run. The 23-year-old goes past three Jaguares players, two of which run into each other before an outrageous side-step on Boffelli. 31-13

56.00: The Jaguares are going route one. After 16 phases, they are stopped when a Lions player knocks on. They opt for a scrum after having the penalty-advantage.

57.00: MASSIVE scrum by the Lions! The visitors get the ball out but lose it forwards. Poor by the Jaguares.

59.00: Dyantyi, who is having a game, collects the high-ball and the Lions go wide. However, Coetzee loses the ball forward and a promising move breaks down.
