Lions beat Stormers in Johannesburg

From a South African point of view Super Rugby fans will have to wait until the final match of Round 8 for the clash of the week when the Lions host the Stormers.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick off.

Jean-Luc du Plessis kicks off and the match is underway.

1.00: The Stormers get the ball back and Cheslin Kolbe goes for a drop goal but misses.

2.00: The Lions knock on so the Stormers have a scrum. Penalty to the Lions from Referee Stuart Berry. The Lions choose another scrum.

6.00: Elton Jantjies tries to clear the ball on the run but Juan de Jongh knocks it on. Julian Redelinghuys comes off injured.

9.00: Penalty to the Stormers. Du Plessis takes the kick and he nails it. Stormers lead.

12.00: The Lions hit back and win a penalty. Jantjies takes the kick and levels the scores.

15.00: A high tackle gives the Stormers a penalty. Du Plessis takes the kick and nails it. Stormers lead.

19.00: The Lions go through 9 phases on attack but then chip ahead. They get the scrum put in.

20.00: The Lions win a penalty from the scrum. The turf is tearing up again. Very poor. Jantjies slots the penalty and the scores are level.

24.00: Another penalty to the Stormers. Du Plessis takes the shot and nails it. Stormers lead again.

28.00: Penalty to the Lions. Jantjies lines up, takes the kick and levels the scores.

31.00: The Lions go off their feet at the breakdown. Stormers penalty. Du Plessis will take the kick.

32.00: Du Plessis lines up the kick and nails it. Stormers lead again.

The Lions get the out wide and Warren Whiteley makes ground but the Stormers eventually bring him down.

34.00: Jantjies chips the ball ahead and the Lions chase the ball and gather it. They go wide and Ruan Combrinck scores in the corner. TRY! That was all Jantjies. The kick and the pass wide.

36.00: Jantjies takes the conversion from the touchline and he nails it. Lions lead.

39.00: The Lions win a penalty from the scrum. Jantjies kicks for touch. The siren sounds.

40.00: Lions take the line out. Its messy but they get the ball out. The Stormers turn the ball over but then concede a penalty.

41.00: Lions tap the ball and run it. The Lions lose the ball out wide but then regather it. At the breakdown the Stormers turn the ball over and attack. The Stormers then win a penalty.

42.00: Du Plessis will kick for posts. Du Plessis takes the shot but misses.

Its half time.

The Lions kick off and the match is underway.

42.00: The Lions break out and race down the wing and score in the corner. However they are called back for an infringement.

44.00: After a long break Armand van der Merwe is helped from the field and into the medical rooms down the tunnel.

49.00: Damian de Allende comes on for Johnny Kotze. The Stormers back line will shuffle around to accommodate de Allende.

51.00: The Stormers have the ball and are on the attack in the Lions half. The Lions defend and win a penalty. They run it but can make nothing of it.

53.00: The Lions are caught offside so the Stormers win a penalty. Faf de Klerk is coming on for the Lions. Du Plessis takes the penalty kick, nails it and the Stormers trail by 1.

The Lions have been sparked into life and they make 75m of ground and get to the line. They are held up but the Lions recycle and go again. Lionel Mapoe loses the ball but they had an advantage.

57.00: The Lions take the quick tap and Faf de Klerk dives over and scores. TRY!

58.00: Jantjies adds the conversion.

60.00: The TMO is called in after a fight on the field. We wait for a referral. Nothing really comes of it.

62.00: The Stormers slip off a couple of tackles after a quick line out. They keep the ball moving through the hands and Nic Groom offloads to Siya Kolisi who runs in the Stormers first TRY!

64.00: Du Plessis adds the conversion. Stormers trail by one.

68.00: Three scrum re-sets eat up time on the clock. Eventually on the fourth scrum the Stormers win the scrum and run the ball.

71.00: The Lions win a penalty and they kick for touch.

73.00: Penalty to the Lions in front. Jamtjies takes the kick and the Lions lead by four.

76.00: The Lions get the ball down to the Stormers 22, Jantjies takes a shot with a drop goal and he nails it.

78.00: The Lions kick deep and Jean-Luc du Plessis goes to gather the ball and he knocks on in front of the posts.

79.00: The Scrum collapses. It gets reset. The Lions win the scrum and attack 8m out. They knock on.

80.00: The Stormers win the scrum and run the ball. The Stormers get a free kick and then a penalty.

81.00: Du Plessis boots to the Lions 22. They will have the line out.

82.00: The Stormers win the line out and attack. The Lions defend as the Stormers launch attack after attack.

83.00: Faf de Klerk turns the ball and the Lions kick the ball into touch. That is it. Lions win.
