The Johannesburg based Lions are sweating on the availability of flyhalf Elton Jantjies for their next Super Rugby match which is against the Blues.

Jantjies has a collateral ligament injury to the right knee which he sustained playing against the Hurricanes on Saturday.

The Lions have a bye this weekend so Jantjies will have an extra week to recover from the injury and coach Johan Ackermann said he would know by Tuesday the extent of the injury.

“Elton has a little bit of a knee problem, at this stage it is a medial ligament but we are not sure of the extent of it,” said Ackermann.

“The moment we are sure we will send out the report but we will probably only know by Tuesday because of the holidays. The doctor said he will only be able to do a scan on Tuesday.”

Malcolm Marx and Julian Redelinghuys are making steady progress in recovery and may also return for the next match.

“I hope so they really recovered well in two weeks,” said Ackermann.

“They have another two weeks and we will continue to treat them. They were close and Malcolm in particular was really close. So hopefully they will be ready for the next game.”

The Lions host the Blues on May 14 in Johannesburg in their next match.
