Versatile forward Liam Messam is set to start at Number Eight this Friday night when the Chiefs take on the Cheetahs at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton in Round 11 of the Rebel Sport Super 14.

Messam will be joined in the loose forward trio by Marty Holah who will start at openside flanker, with Kristian Ormsby coming in on the blindside. Steven Bates is named in the reserves for Friday night.

Sione Lauaki is unavailable for selection due to a torn pectoral muscle sustained in the Chiefs v Bulls match a fortnight ago. Lauaki’s injury may be serious enough to require surgery. A decision on this will be made later in the week.

In the Chiefs tight five, Sean Hohneck comes into lock alongside captain Jono Gibbes who is still recovering from a rib and back strain sustained in training on Tuesday.

In the front row Simms Davison starts at loosehead prop, Aleki Lutui at hooker, and Nathan White at tighthead.

Meanwhile, in the backs Sosene Anesi moves to fullback with the Chiefs’ double try scorer from last week Anthony Tahana starting on the wing. Mils Muliaina is bracketed alongside Loki Crichton on the bench. Muliaina sustained a bruised groin during last Saturday’s match and his fitness for this game continues to be assessed.
