Ludeke picks two Bulls sides for warm ups

New Bulls coach Frans Ludeke on Wednesday announced his first two sides since joining the franchise, and there is a marked difference in experience and class of the side that will now play the Valke at Loftus on Thursday night and the side that travels to Wellington to face the Boland Kavaliers on Saturday.

As Ludeke explained at the media conference on Wednesday, the side for the Valke match consists of mainly up-and-coming youngsters who must show that they’re ready for the step up to Super 14 level, with the experienced newcomer-fullback to the Bulls Tiger Mangweni an exception.

In what is arguably the strongest side Ludeke could pick at this stage with five Springboks on the injury list, Morne Steyn starts as flyhalf with Springbok Derick Hougaard on the bench.

Whether anything should be read into this selection, is debatable. Ludeke yesterday said that Steyn would move to inside centre after halftime, when Wynand Olivier will be replaced.

“There’s nothing wrong with Wynand. I’m just phasing in the players slowly where possible,” Ludeke explained his proposed move.

Former Griqua fullback Zane Kirchner gets the chance to stake his claim for the retired Johan Roets’ fullback berth, while the young lock paring of Wilhelm Steenkamp and Fudge Mabeta get their opportunity to impress in the absence of the locks who are either injured or who now ply their trade elsewhere.

Both sides by far exceed the allowable seven replacements, indicating that the two matches will, as can be expected, be used as trial matches in he fullest sense of the word.

The match against the Valke has been moved to Loftus’ outfield because of the incessant rain over the past week to limit the damage to the main field. “We had little option but to move it to the C-field,” Ludeke said on Wednesday.

“We have to play, and that was our only option.”
