Lyons Back in Action for Academy Against Victoria

HSBC Waratah David Lyons is primed for a return from injury when the NSW Waratah Academy takes on Victoria in Melbourne on Saturday.

Lyons, a veteran of 83 Super Rugby matches for the Waratahs and 41 Tests for Australia, is expected to play 30 minutes after being named on the Academy bench.

He missed the start of the Super 14 after undergoing a post-Wallaby tour arthroscopy on his knee.

“All along we’d hoped David might be available for selection against the Force on Friday week,” HSBC Waratahs head coach Ewen McKenzie said.

“His availability against Victoria is a good sign that he’s back to 100 percent.

“Being the type of person he is he’s worked hard on his recovery and has progressed to the point where he’s now ready to play.

“After losing one of our most experienced players in Phil Waugh to injury it’s nice to get a guy with a similar level of experience back.”

Academy head coach Shannon Fraser said having Lyons in the side was a rare luxury.

“It’s not often you get the opportunity to pick a guy like David Lyons,” Fraser said.

“We’re lucky in that sense, and also in that we could select the likes of Lachlan Turner and Jeremy Tilse, both of whom were with the Waratahs in South Africa.

“Our focus is on keeping momentum in our development program and the strength of the team selected should certainly help us achieve that.”

Hooker Josh Mann-Rae will skipper the side with lock Shawn Mackay and scrumhalf Nathan Sievert his vice-captains.
