Highlanders coach Glenn Moore says that he will name his team captain for 2009 when the squad resumes training next month but the rumour circulating is that All Blacks prop Jamie Mackintosh is the favourite.

The Highlanders wrapped up training for 2008 on Saturday in Dunedin today before they break for the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Twenty-five of the 28-man squad met up on December the 2nd to begin their preparations for the 2009 Super 14.

All Blacks Jamie Mackintosh, Jimmy Cowan and Adam Thomson were the three players missing after they were given a break as they featured on the All Blacks tour of Hong Kong and Europe.

The team will rejoin on on January the 5th as they prepare for their Super 14 opener against the Brumbies.

Moore has given no secrets away as to who his Highlanders captain will be but The Southland Times understands Stags captain Mackintosh is the frontrunner to be awarded the job.

“We’ll look to probably make an announcement about the captain at the end of that first week we get back together,” he said.

Craig Newby was the previous captain but he is now playing for Leicester Tigers in England.

The Highlanders will play three preseason games against the Chiefs, the Crusaders and the Blues late next month before the season starts on February 13.
