Mallett to change Stormers management ?

The extension of the powers of Nick Mallett, Western Province Director of Rugby, could spell disaster for embattled Stormers coach Kobus van der Merwe.

Mallett had those powers curbed last year, after his bid to replace Van der Merwe failed when the Stormers coach convinced the Western Province Rugby Union that Mallett’s interference was having a negative impact on the side’s performance.

But now, as the Stormers grossly under-perform, the pendulum may swing back Mallett’s way.

Nick Mallett had proposed that Alan Solomons, historically the Stormers most successful coach, be returned to his former role at the Cape Town franchise.

This may now become a reality.

WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd met with the Union on Monday to discuss the extension of responsibility to Nick Mallett as the Director of Rugby.

His responsibilities would include all rugby structures, including coach and player recruitment. This comes in the wake of the Stormers disappointing start to the Super 14, as well as the line of thought that has arisen that a clipped Mallett is not worth his salary.

In order for him to be effective, he must be given the freedom to do his job. But this is countered by the hesitance of some to place that amount of power in the hands of one.

Theuns Roodman, Chief Executive Officer of the Western Province Rugby Union, speaking to Die Burger, said, concerning the conclave, “The union is the main shareholder and must make the decision.”

The outcome is likely to grossly impact both the Stormers and Western Province rugby.
