Former Leopards and Wildebeest flyhalf Tiaan Marx is back in Puma country and will start against the EP Elephants in Witbank on Friday together with another new import, former Lions prop Pieter van der Merwe.

Marx, born and bred in Nelspruit, made his mark two years ago for the NWU-Puk at the Superbowl and the Leopards in the Vodacom Cup before moving to Natal where he joined the Sharks Academy.

The young flyhalf has a big boot and is quick off the mark and next to nippy scrumhalf Jacques Coetzee can make his mark in this years’ Currie Cup competition.

Van der Merwe played for the Lions last year and he was on several unions’ potential lists, but he decided to play Varsity Cup for Tukkies instead.

Big centre Sasha Marot would have played his last match for the Pumas this weekend but an injured back is keeping him out while Christiaan Els is struggling with a groin injury. Jiffy Lamprecht starts in the unfamiliar position of centre after earlier service at fullback, wing and flyhalf.

The match against the Elephants is on Friday night at 19:00 in Witbank.

Jannie van der Merwe; Gordon Pangetti, Jiffy Lamprecht, Jovan Botha, Hyron Thysse; Tiaan Marx, Jacques Coetzee; Quintin Minnaar, Francois van Wyk, Corne Steenkamp C, Johan van Heerden, Nicol Mostert, Pieter van der Merwe, Morne Kruger, Dawie Steyn.

Reserves: Gert van Schalkwyk, Ashton Constant, Wilhelm Jacobs, Martin Sithole, Shaun Venter, John Noble, Rudi Vogt.
