Matfield will be back for Super 14

Tana Umaga has released Victor Matfield early from his Toulon contract which means that he will miss less than half of the Super 14.

Matfield was set to join the French club on a six-month deal in January that would have ruled him out of the Super 14 and this could have put his Springbok career in jeopardy.

However Matfield and new Bulls coach Frans Ludeke have struck a deal with Umaga who is the coach of Toulon that will see Matfield play in France for just two months.

This means that Matfield should only miss only about four rounds of the Super 14 which could see him playing for the Bulls by mid March when they take on the Reds.

Toulon currently lead the French second division table with six consecutive wins and they are desperate to win promotion to the Top 14 and have nine crucial matches through January and February.

Holding on to Matfield for that period will see him join a star-studded side that includes George Gregan, Andrew Mehrtens, Anton Oliver and Lawrence Sephaka.

Matfield’s return will be a major boost for the Bulls who will have to defend their title without coach Heyneke Meyer who is now the favourite to take over from Jake White.

Matfield recently stated a desire to stick with the Springboks for the British and Irish Lions 2009 tour of South Africa.
