QR Queensland Reds flanker Tom McVerry is leaving the Reds after seven years and 55 games for Queensland.

He will take up a contract with Kyuden Voltex in Japan.

Performance Rugby Manager Ben Whitaker said Tom McVerry had been a great contributor to Queensland Rugby, as a Reds player and as inaugural captain of the Wilson HTM Ballymore Tornadoes in the Australian Rugby Championship.

“We and all Reds supporters thank him for the important role he has played and wish him well in his future career,” Whitaker said.

A graduate of the Reds Academy, McVerry made his Queensland debut against Argentina‘s Pumas in 2000 and his Super 12 debut in 2003 against the Canterbury Crusaders, the first of 44 Super Rugby appearances.

He also represented Australia in Sevens Rugby at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
