The Australian Rugby Union have confirmed that a compelling application, aimed at ensuring Melbourne becomes the 15th Super Rugby team in 2011, will be submitted to SANZAR on September 25.

Two of the three groups to lodge Expressions of Interest in a Melbourne Super 15 franchise ‘ Melbourne Rebels Rugby Union Pty Ltd (in conjunction with the VRU) and VicSuper 15 ‘attended the ARU Board meeting held in Sydney today.

The ARU Board said in a statement that they wanted to make clear that they were impressed at today’s discussions by the levels of enthusiasm for the game in Melbourne and the commitment to the establishment of a Super Rugby franchise in the city.

The Board believes it has benefited from the opportunity to discuss the plans of the respective interested parties.

Support from the general Rugby community in Melbourne for a Super Rugby team has also been obvious during the process.

The ARU Board and Management say that they will now continue their work with all interested parties, including the Victorian Government, on an appropriate ownership model.

However, a decision on the final ownership structure is not required before the Melbourne application is unveiled to the SANZAR Executive Committee in two weeks.

The ARU say that they are already well advanced, and working with the Victorian Government, in preparing to present the application for Melbourne as per the requirement for National Unions to deliver the formal submissions to SANZAR.

The ARU also wanted to clarify a key point in that they have no intention of owning the Melbourne team.

There are two competitors ‘ the South African Rugby Union representing the Southern Kings and the ARU representing Melbourne ‘ in the race to be awarded the 15th Super Rugby licence for the Super 15.

SANZAR is scheduled to make a decision on the awarding of the Super 15 licence on October 21.
