Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer believes that his side has been unfairly branded boring and uncreative.

Speaking in the wake of his side’s demolition of the Lions, Meyer cited statistics to affirm his case.

“We have beaten the Stormers and the Lions, outscoring sides who supposedly are better at scoring tries, by seven to two, and five to one respectively,” Meyer told Rugby365.

“What we are seeing are the results of three years of backline development, as well as the fruits of Todd Louden’s [backline coach] influence upon the team.”

Meyer pointed out that his backline have now been playing together for three years. The seven players have rewarded Meyer’s trust in them with Currie Cup titles, and semi-final berths in Super rugby.

The only disruption to the side has been the untimely death of centre Etienne Botha.

“We are now hitting our full stride, with all personnel available for the first time this season.”

Derick Hougaard, Wynand Olivier and Johan Roets have all been injured at various times, while JP Nel has suffered a suspension.

Saturday’s Ellis Park victory is a type of vindication for Meyer.

“The Lions are always tough at home. That has always been the case. This year has seen them beat the Crusaders and the Hurricanes at home.

“The first half was tougher than it perhaps looked.

“But we had a good chat at the break, and we decided upon a new strategy of attacking the second channel instead of the inside, and it paid dividends.”

The Bulls are due to play the Blues this Friday, and Meyer is wary of a backlash after their loss to the Stormers.

“The Blues will come out all guns blazing.

“They are under massive pressure, and, being an incredible side, will turn it on against us.

“It is a must-win game for us. We must keep our destiny in our own hands.”

Meyer confirmed there were no major injury concerns to his side, although Bakkies Botha did take a knock to the knee.

All the players are expected to be available for Friday’s clash.
