The Australia Rugby Union boss John O’Neill says he isn’t upset by New Zealand and South Africa’s cool reaction to his proposal for an expanded Super rugby tournament and plans to push ahead with formal talks about the concept.

O’Neill would like to see a one-and-a-half round competition spanning 26 weeks with a Japanese team added to those from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

O’Neill’s NZRU counterpart Steve Tew said that the ARU proposal “would clearly suit the Australian set of circumstances, probably better than ourselves or South Africa”.

O’Neill who is unfazed after the cool response says he expects formal talks with New Zealand and South Africa on his proposals to start next month after those countries dealt with pressing domestic issues by the end of this month.
