Tongan international Hale T-Pole has joined the Ospreys on a one-year deal.

The back-row player joins the Welsh region from New Zealand Super 14 side the Highlanders having impressed during the World Cup.

Ospreys Director of Rugby Kevin Hopkins has admitted that recent injuries have forced the region into securing cover in the back row.

“Recent injuries have made it necessary for us to look for some additional resource in our back row,” said Hopkins.

“Hale will give us this cover through to the end of the season.”

Hale has won nine Tongan and two Pacific Island national caps and was part of the Tongan squad in World Cup and he could make his debut for the Ospreys as early as next week in the EDF Energy Cup against Worcester.

“Whilst we are committed to developing the promising young back row talent we have coming through in Rory Pitman, Tom Smith and Ben Lewis we have made the judgment that at this time we need experience in key positions,” added Hopkins.

“I am sure our younger players will gain from the experience of playing and training with him.”
