Otago have moved quickly to put the so-called player drain into reverse thrust by signing promising Wellington and Hurricanes lock Ross Kennedy.

The Union’s chief executive, Russell Gray, said Kennedy was a quality acquisition and he moves to Otago at an ideal time with All Black lock James Ryan sidelined for several months.

‘It shows that the union is proactive and not just farewelling players,’ he said. ‘We have a strong recruitment and retention policy and Ross’s move here is another example of that.’

Kennedy, 24, has played 48 games for Wellington since his debut in 2002 and played 24 times for the Hurricanes. A product of the New Zealand age grade system, he also played for the Junior All Blacks in 2005.
