Townsville is building a Festival of Rugby around next week’s Tooheys New Super 14 match between the QR Queensland Reds and the Highlanders on Friday, May 12.

It’s the first time an Australian Super Rugby game has been played outside the capital cities and Townsville Rugby is bent on making it a four day party weekend.

It starts with a Suncorp Rugby Luncheon on Wednesday, May 10, follows with a “March to the Match” at Dairy Farmers Stadium on the Friday, and winds up with the inaugural Townsville Rugby 10s and after-party on Saturday, May 13.

Incoming Reds coach Eddie Jones is the guest speaker for the Suncorp lunch and a sell-out crowd is expected.

Saturday’s “social” 10’s tournament is expected to attract teams from around the state, with points to be awarded for “off-field antics” as well as rugby prowess.

Townsville Rugby’s Craig Stack said the 10s was already generating interest from a number of former country representative players who are looking to have another run with their old team-mates.

‘There are a number of former players from Cairns and Townsville who are in their 30s now who are looking to put together teams of their own age to play a bit of rugby and enjoy the occasion,’ Mr Stack said.

‘They won’t be playing for sheep stations but they will be playing for the honour of their team mascot, which under the tournament rules will need to be with them at all times.’

The “After Party” at the Townsville Rugby grounds in Hugh Street will include live entertainment, Townsville’s biggest barbecue and plenty of north Queensland rugby hospitality.
