The Pumas and Eagles will be fighting it out for the First League title In Witbank on Friday, but the cherry on top for both these Unions won’t be the silverware on offer, but promotion at the end of the season.

Both these Unions have aspirations to play in the Currie Cup’s Premier division next year and will have opportunities over the next fortnight to qualify.

Taking this year’s results in account points to a Puma win.

The coal miners have beaten the Eagles on both occasions this year, with 18 points in their first fixture in Witbank and with 16 in George.

The game in George, however, was much closer than the score-line suggests and with 10 minutes to it was anyone’s game.

The Pumas are the undoubted Kings of the First League and nearly went through the season unbeaten.

They have scored twice as many tries as any of the opponents, while wingers Allister Ketteldas and Braam Pretorius are the top try scorer and point scorers of the season.

Both play an exciting brand of rugby with the Pumas scoring 62 tries in the 10 League fixtures.

The Eagles on the other hand, have conceded the least amount of tries during the season.

And with Ricardo Croy at flyhalf they have a new leash of life and the match won’t lack excitement.

Winning will still be important on the night as neither side would wan’t to lose momentum before their two important promotion fixtures.

There is added spice to the final with five former Eagles starting for the Pumas in Ketteldas, flyhalf Valentine van Wyk, number eight Doppies le Roux, tighthead prop Ashley Buys and hooker Hannes Franklin and one more on the bench, three-quarter Ashwin Scott.
