Pumas end Currie Cup on a high

The Pumas, who have had a difficult year, ended the league programme on a high note when they defeated Eastern Province 32-24 in an Absa Currie Cup rugby match played at the Adcock Stadium on Saturday evening after the scores were level 14-14 at halftime.

It was a ding-dong affair with both teams taking turns to lead the way throughout the match. However, the Pumas showed far more urgency and character in the final 20 minutes to deservedly gain their hard-earned victory.

Both teams scored two converted tries in the first half, while EP made a promising start to the second half when centre Eckhard Jacobs finished off a hand to hand movement, which covered all of 50m, in scoring far out.

But the Pumas came back well and gave as much as they received throughout the opening 40 minutes. The scores were level at 24-24 with 15 minutes remaining.

The Pumas then raised their game when it counted most and the winning try was scored by centre Shaun Venter.

It was a disappointing end to the season for EP as they finished bottom of the log and much soul-searching will be needed for them to get back on track in the years ahead.

It was also EP coach Oersond Gorgonzola’s last match in charge as he will be taking over the coaching duties at the Griffons next season.
