The Pumas sounded a stern warning to all the contenders in the Currie Cup First League by demolishing the Valke 79-24 in Witbank on Saturday afternoon, with three players joining in the fun with hat-tricks.

New flyhalf Valentine van Wyk marshalled his troops like a veteran and was one of the trio who scored three tries against the Valke, who looked like cannon-fodder.

Van Wyk, his former Eagle team-mate Allister Ketteldas and new fullback Shaun Venter each ran in three tries as the Pumas crossed the Valke’s white chalk twelve times.

Venter, a retreaded scrumhalf, revelled in the 15-jersey and made merry. The backs ran in all the tries but one.

The names on the score-board were those of the backs, but the pack laid a brilliant foundation, by dominating every phase of play.
