After claiming the 2009 Currie Cup First Division title following their 47-19 victory over the SWD Eagles in Witbank, Pumas coach Jimmy Stonehouse says his team is now ready to book their place in next season’s Currie Cup Premier Division.

The hosts, who ended the season in first position on the log, comprehensively defeated their opponents from George in Friday night’s finale by running in six tries to one.

The Pumas now prepare for their series of promotion/relegation fixtures against the Boland Cavaliers with the first match set for Saturday in Wellington.

“We’re now looking to build on the momentum and take it into our match against Boland,” said Stonehouse.

“If we can be successful in Wellington, I will really be optimistic about our chances of qualifying for the Currie Cup Premier Division because the last match will be here in Witbank.

“It would have been nice if we could have had a break similar to that of Boland. Thankfully, we don’t have any injuries. All our players will be up for the next two weekends and we’re really forward to those challenges.”

SWD Eagles coach Johann Lerm said the defeat was not the end of the world for his team. The George side will face the Platinum Leopards in a series of promotion/relegation fixtures in their attempt to qualify for next season’s Currie Cup Premier Division.

“Obviously it hurts, but it is not the end of the world,” said Lerm.

“There is still plenty to play for in the next two weeks. I’m looking at the bigger picture. We want to be in theCurrie Cup Premier Division next season and that is now our main goal.”
