The Pumas were crowned Currie Cup First Division champions with an emphatic 47-19 victory over the visiting Eagles in the final in Witbank on Friday night.

The Pumas painted Witbank grey with a silver lining in scoring six tries to one late effort by the Eagles.

The foundation of the victory was laid by the pack, and captain Hannes Franklin – who led the Eagles last year – set the perfect example with two short-range forward drives in the first half.

Big Ronnie Uys, who demolished the Eagles scrum and showed deft touches with ball in hand, was next to score after the Pumas threatened to pull away from their opponents.

Uys gathered the ball 25 meters out scored with a superb dive.

With number one and two bathing in the try glory, the rest of the team gained momentum and winger Allister Ketteldas scored the next two tries to end the season as South Africa’s premier try scorer at First Division level.

His second try was one of the highlights of the season when the Pumas scored from deep inside their half with Man-of-the-Match Uys again setting up momentum with a beautiful inside pass.

The Eagles scored with two minutes left on the clock when Norman Nelson found his way to the try-line after a Bobby Joubert break. By then the Pumas had most of the reserves on and the try was only of mathematical interest.

The last points of the match belonged to the new champions as Ashwin Scott kicked a ball through to gather and score.

The Eagles tried hard and defended well, but the dam had to burst against a quality side which will be hard to stop in qualifying for the Premier Division.
