The Melbourne Rebels will be looking to log back-to-back wins against the Blues for the first time in Super Rugby after picking up a 20-10 win when they last met (Round 16, 2018).

The Rebels have won only three of their last 19 Super Rugby games against New Zealand opposition (L16).

  • Melbourne will be looking for consecutive wins against New Zealand teams for the first time since May 2015 after picking up a 28-22 win against the Highlanders in their last such fixture (February 2020).
  • The Blues have won six of their last eight Super Rugby games in Australia (L2); a period across which they have led at half-time in every game on the day.
  • The Rebels have won seven turnovers per game in Super Rugby in 2021, the most of any team and one per game more than the Blues (6).
  • Dalton Papali’i has made three clean breaks within the opening 10 minutes of games in Super Rugby in 2021, the joint-most of any player alongside the Brumbies’ Pete Samu.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

In the meantime, why not have a look at the match preview.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at AAMI Park, Melbourne, Australia.

3.00: Otere Black knocks on with the Blues in a good attacking field position.

6.00: The Blues are all over the Rebels at the minute, but good defending by the home team forces the visitors to kick away the ball.

7.00: PENALTY! Otere Black opens the scoring. 0-3

10.00: A big scrum by the Rebels earns the Melbourne side a kickable penalty in front.

11.00: PENALTY! Matt To’omua levels the scores. 3-3

13.00: Another handling error by Rieko Ioane costs his team another good attacking chance inside the opposition’s 22.

15.00: A lot of reset scrums in Super Rugby Trans-Tasman, although, there is always a lot; however, there seem to be problems since the tournament began.

16.00: Now, the Blues win the scrum penalty in front of the poles.

17.00: PENALTY! Black knocks over the simple kick. 3-6

20.00: Rieko Ioane loses the ball again, but this time the Blues had a penalty advantage and will kick to the corner.

21.00: The Blues win another penalty after Michael Wells collapses the maul. Blues go again to touch.

23.00: The Rebels steal the Blues lineout, but only clear to their 22.

25.00: Leon MacDonald’s men must still be on the plane because they look lethargic and uninterested. The mistakes are schoolboy, to say the least. They manage to win another penalty, a third inside the 22 on their sixth visit.

26.00: PENALTY! Black takes the points on offer. 3-9

27.00: Ioane gives away a penalty for not releasing Marika Koroibete after making the tackle.

29.00: A powerful driving maul by the Rebels pushes the Blues 15 metres back into their half.

30.00: NO TRY! Bryce Heem picks up a loose Matt To’omua pass and races away to score under the posts. However, the Aussie TMO rules out the score because of a slight touch of the ball from Rieko Ioane’s fore-arm when To’omua passed the ball. That looked like a poor call. 3-9

31.00: A third scrum penalty goes the way of the Blues, who rumble the Rebels off their own ball. Black calls for the tee.

33.00: PENALTY! Black slots a long-range penalty from near the halfway line. 3-12

35.00: The Blues isolate a Rebels attacker, and win a penalty; however, Black does not find touch, although they do get the lineout after Marika Koroibete cleared to the Rebels’ 10m.

37.00: The Rebels cannot get their driving maul going, the Blues collapse the maul, allowing the Melbourne pack a second crack.

38.00: YELLOW CARD! Adrian Chaot enters the maul from the side and is sent to the bin. 3-12

39.00: The Blues get out of jail by winning the Melbourne lineout; that is disgusting for the home team, who probably deserved a penalty try for all the cynical play by the Kiwis.

40.00: The Blues have a centrefield scrum.

42.00: TRY! The blues go backward, yet somehow, they manage to find space down the right-hand touchline through Heem. The winger pops to Hoskins Sotutu, who uses his water polo skills to keep alive a poor pass. The ball is recycled to Black, who throws a long, cutout pass to Tom Robinson, who cuts inside to score. 3-17

43.00: MISS! The kick is wide. 3-17

The halftime score was Melbourne Rebels 3 Blues 17

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Australia.

43.00: Oh, dear! The Rebels botch another try-scoring opportunity when they concede another penalty at the ruck inside the Blues’ 22.

47.00: TRY! It’s that man again! Hoskins Sotutu drives through the tackles to score his side’s second try. 3-22

48.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 3-24

53.00: It’s all Blues at the moment, they are swarming the Rebels in attack, and smashing them in defence. They are camped inside the 22 and look like grabbing a third try very soon.

55.00: Sotutu goes close, but is ruled short – the Blues are all over the Rebels, who need to defend this attack or the game is gone.

56.00: TRY! Sotutu gets his second after breaking from a powerful scrum. Eloff popped up, the ref’s arm went out, the Blues walked the Rebels back before the No. 8 picked up the ball and dived over for the score. 3-29

57.00: CONVERSION! Black splits the sticks. 3-31

60.00: It’s all Blues again, they want to turn the screw.

61.00: TRY! Akira Ioane finishes off a sublime move after Gerard Cowley-Tuoti’s midfield linebreak. Cowley-Tuoti raced from halfway to the Rebels’ 22. Finlay Christie recycled to Harry Plummer, who played Ioane. The loose forward sold a dummy before crossing for another try. 3-36

62.00: MISS! The kick is no good. 3-36

66.00: TRY! Harry Plummer’s crossfield kick is caught by AJ Lam, standing alone on the sideline, to walk in and score. 3-41

68.00: CONVERSION! Plummer adds the extras. 3-43

72.00: The Rebels have wilted under the lights in Melbourne.

75.00: TRY! Akira Ioane has a double. 3-48

76.00: CONVERSION! Plummer adds the two. 3-50

78.00: Rebels win a meaningless scrum penalty.

81.00: Game over, the Rebels lose in record fashion. The Blues were superb.
