Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

In the meantime why not have a look at the match preview.

.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Melbourne where the Rebels are looking to make the playoffs for the first time in their short Super Rugby history.

.00: The Chiefs, playing in white, are on the attack, running back Will Genia’s box-kick. Eventually, the attack breaks down after a knock on by the Kiwis.

.00: Melbourne has been in free-fall after starting the season, strong. They have lost six of their past eight matches, and need to win to get into the playoffs.

.00: Waikato kept coming around the corner from the driving maul, but a knock on in contact, kills the attack and gives the home side a reprieve.

.00: The Chiefs are looking to play with pace and tempo, using their big ball carriers to bash their way over the advantage line.

.00: Lots of kicking in the opening stages of this game. Both teams looking for territory. A nice wrap-around with Quade Cooper and Billy Meakes before the standoff’s grubber gives the Rebels an attacking lineout on the 22.

.00: The Rebels win the penalty for not rolling away by the Chiefs. Cooper kicks to the corner.

.00: A poor lineout is lost. The Chiefs rumble up the field before Jack Debreczeni kicks to the Melbourne 22.

.00: Marika Koroibete is knocked out after his head hit Shaun Stevenson’s elbow. Koroibete chased the kick but got his head on the wrong side of his opposite number and will leave the field. Alex Nankivell also leaves the field because of a knee injury.

.00: TRY! Sam Cane finishes off a sensational counter-attack. Debreczeni started with a break before playing Anton Lienert-Brown on his inside. Lienert-Brown raced forward, slipped a pass to Brad Webber, who offloaded to Angus Ta’avao, in support inside the 22. The prop cut inside and sent Cane away under the sticks. 0-5

.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 0-7

.00: Rebels win the turnover, then a penalty for offsides at the breakdown. Campbell Magnay’s tackle won possession, although, the referee missed a knock-on afterwards.

.00: PENALTY! Reece Hodge puts his side on the board. 3-7

.00: TRY! Another score from a bad kick ends in five for the visitors. Cooper’s grubber hits Stevenson’s knee and bounces forward. The winger picks up the rolling ball and races 50 metres to score under the posts. 3-12

.00: CONVERSION! Another two by Debreczeni. 3-14

.00: A try goes begging. Ta’avao plays Solomon Alaimalo, but the fullback passes inside instead of wide to his right to Stevenson on the wing. It would have been a certain try. A big let-off for the hosts.

.00: The Rebels defence is holding up, their scrum is doing well, too. However, it is mistakes from kicks that keep putting them in trouble.

.00: The Chiefs are back on the march inside their opponent’s 22. But a knock on from the immeasurable Brodie Retallick halts proceedings.

.00: a counter-attack from the Rebels ends when a stray pass is gathered by the Chiefs.

.00: Dave Wessels’ side come again, they are inside the opposition’s 22, but they get isolated and lose a penalty.

.00: The Kiwis are rumbling forward with another rolling maul, although, they bring the maul down and have resorted to pick-and-drives inside the Melbourne red zone.

.00: Atu Moli’s knock on after a 12-phase attack, earns the Rebels some respite. The Chiefs have had 66% possession, and have dominated territory, too.

.00: The visitors’ handling is letting them down the same way the Rebels’ kicking is doing for the hosts.

.00: OH DEAR! TRY! Hodge’s loose pass is picked up by Stevenson, who dances through several defenders before Cooper tackles him, short. Before the winger goes down, he plays Lachlan Boshier, on his outside for their team’s third. That is a coach killer! 3-19

.00: CONVERSION! Another two. 3-21

The halftime score was Rebels 3 Chiefs 21
