Crusaders beat Rebels in Melbourne




Melbourne’s Rebels are in 17th place in the overall Super Rugby standings and this week they host the tournament leading Crusaders who have yet to lose a match.

While the Crusaders have won all 12 of their matches the Rebels have won and drawn one of their 11 matches which indicates the size of the task for the Melbourne side.

We are waiting for the kick off.

The Rebels kick off and the match is underway.

1.00: The first penalty goes to the Rebels. Reece Hodge kicks for touch.

2.00: Penalty to the Crusaders. They kick for touch and take the line out.

3.00: The Crusaders win the line out and attack the Rebels on their 22m line until they knock on.

5.00: The Crusaders get the ball to the 5m line where Israel Dagg loses the ball. They are called back for an earlier knock on.

7.00: Penalty in front to the Crusaders. Richie Mo’unga lines up the posts.

8.00: Mo’unga takes the kick and nails it. Crusaders lead.

9.00: There is a break in play as Amanaki Mafi has to go off for a Head injury assessment.

12.00: Pete Samu has also left the field due to injury. The Rebels win a penalty for the Crusaders front row collapsing. Hodge kicks for touch.

14.00: The Crusaders win a penalty back for the Rebels scrum collapsing. They take the line out option.

16.00: Sam Whitelock crashes through the Rebels defence. He is caught but the Crusaders recycle and pass the ball out to Manasa Mataele who scores in the corner. TRY! Amanaki Mafi comes back on. Samu will not be coming back on.

18.00: Mo’unga takes the conversion kick and nails it.

22.00: The Crusaders are constantly probing the Rebels. Some handling skills are letting them down at crucial moments.

23.00:Scrum penalty to the Crusaders. They take the line out.

24.00: The Crusaders win the line out and Reece Hodge intentionally knocks the ball down so he is yellow carded. Crusaders go for the line out again.

25.00: The Crusaders win the line out and drive over the line. There are bodies everywhere so the TMO will check it.  The TRY is awarded to Jed Brown. Crusaders possession is at 80% and this is the first time the Crusaders have scored more than one try in Melbourne.

Mo’unga adds the conversion.

30.00: The Crusaders go on the attack from a line out deep in their own territory. They move the ball through the hands and change side and stretch the Rebels defence and Seta Tamanivalu goes over to score. TRY!

31.00: Richie Mo’unga adds the conversion again.

33.00: The Rebels win a line out and Colby Fa’ainga slips an inside pass to Marika Koroibete who slices through the Crusaders and scores. TRY!

34.00: Ben Volavola adds the conversion.

3500: The Crusaders hit back by working the ball back into the Rebels 22, Whitelock offloads to Jed Brown on the wing and he scores his second in the corner. TRY!

36.00: Mo’unga adds the conversion.

40.00: As the siren sounds for half time the Rebels get the ball into the Crusaders half. They press forward but lose the ball and get pushed back. Penalty to the Rebels.

41.00: The Rebels take the line out but are held out. It’s half time.

The Crusaders kick off and the second half is underway.

41.00: The Rebels get the perfect start as they get the ball to the line. Toby Smith reaches for the line and scores. TRY!

42.00: Hodge slots the conversion.

44.00: The Crusaders attack down the wing and Mataele almost gets to the line but has to pass the ball – to the Rebels.

45.00: The Crusaders have to build their attack from deep again and this time David Havili slips off one tackle, dummies, fends off another tackler and scores. TRY!

46.00: Mo’unga hits the post with the conversion.

52.00: The Crusaders go through five phases before the ball goes into touch. Rebels line out.

57.00: The Crusders get the ball into the Rebels 22. As they get into the 22 though the Rebels intercept and counter attack. The ball is moved across the field and  Amanaki Mafi races down the wing and offloads to Koroibete who takes it to the tryline and scores. TRY!

59.00:Hodge misses the conversion.

61.00: The Crusaders hit back. Jordan Taufua goes on a powerful run down the wing and offloads to Mitchell Drummond who finishes it off with the TRY!

62.00: Mitchell Hunt misses the conversion.

64.00: The TMO reviews some potential foul play which holds up the game. Penalty against Sean McMahon for a neck roll. Mitchell Hunt kicks for touch.

68.00: Penalty to the Rebels. They take the line out and will go for the try. The Rebels win the line out but cannot do anything with it.

70.00: Penalty to the Crusaders. They kick for touch and the line out.

72.00: Sean McMahon has taken a blow to his arm. He drops to the floor and the medics come in. He has to come off and is replaced. Looks like a bad break.

75.00:Lots of ball being dropped by both sides but this is not calming either sides’s enthusiasm.

76.00: News from the side is the McMahon has a dislocated elbow so he could return soon.

78.00: The Rebels go through 6 phases inside their half but the Crusaders look happy to defend.

79.00: The Rebels attack but try to kick the ball upfield and it goes to Havili who counter attacks. The Crusaders get into the Rebels 22 but then concede a penalty.

80.00: The siren sounds as the Crusaders get the ball back and get into the Rebels 22. There is a knock on which ends the game.
