Jaguares beat Rebels in Melbourne

The Rebels and the Jaguares have yet to meet in Super Rugby and should the Australian Rugby Union decide to drop the Rebels, this match could the only ever fixture between the teams.

The Rebels have had an awful season which has not been helped by the threat of being kicked out of Super Rugby.

While the Jaguares have been disappointing, despite some excellent performances.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

.00: BEEP! BEEP! Referee Angus Gardner gets us underway in Melbourne. Mitch Inman is playing in his 100th Super Rugby cap, the centre leading the Rebels out. Playing conditions are perfect at AAMI Park, so we can expect lots of tries and running rugby.

.00: PENALTY! Reece Hodge puts his team on the board with an early penalty: 3-0

.00: Encouraging signs from the home team; they have started to superb running moves from inside their half. Marika Koroibete has had two runs after Inman and Hodge’s deft running and handling. The Jaguares concede another penalty, so Hodge will call for the tee.

.00: PENALTY! Hodge with his second. The TMO is having a look at the kick because the poles are short, and the centre kicks the ball very high. Again, the kick goes over the sticks – maybe they should make them taller, like at Ellis Park and Kings Park in South Africa. The TMO confirms the successful penalty: 6-0

.00: It is all Rebels in the early exchanges. The plan seems to be: send the ball wide after two/three phases taking the ball up. The Jaguares keep giving away penalties, but then again, they are the most penalised team in Super Rugby.

.00: The Jaguares win the Rebels’ lineout, clear the danger and go up the field. Lopeti Timani is penalised for a high tackle, so Nicolas Sanchez will have a shot at goal.

.00: PENALTY! Sanchez gets the Argentinians on the board: 6-3

.00: From the restart, the visitors give away another penalty; it’s their fourth of the game. But, they win the Rebels’ lineout – again – and clear. Great work by the Jaguares and Leonardo Senatore, in the set piece.

.00: Colby Fainga’a forces Martin Landajo into a mistake with some good work from the side of the scrum. Landajo held the ball too long and allowed the flank to make the tackle. The Rebels will have the scrum on the Jags’ 22, in centre field.

.00: Angus Gardner talks to Austin Creevy about the multiple penalty infringements that are being committed by the Jaguares. Hodge will take another shot at goal.

.00: PENALTY! Hodge kicks his third of the evening: 9-3

.00: Joaquin Tuculet kicks a bomb and it is claimed by Emiliano Boffelli. The Rebels manage to win the ball back and they launch a counter attack. A Kicking duel ensues, as both teams look to play in the other’s half.

.00: Creevy takes a pass from Tuculet and goes through a gap in the Rebels’ backline, however, the pass was forward from the fullback and the home team will get a scrum. That was close.

.00: TRY Reece Hodge! The centre takes a pass from Nic Stirzaker, off first-phase ball. Hodge waits for space and sends Jack Maddocks through a HUGE gap. The fullback runs into Jaguares’ territory, draws the defender and gives Hodge the ball, on his outside shoulder and the centre runs clear to score: 14-3

.00: Hodge converts his try and there is daylight between the two teams: 16-3

.00: There are some problems with setting the scrums; they have been pretty even, but always need to be reset.

.00: The Jaguares set up two nice moves, but they make a dog’s breakfast of their good play with some ordinary passing and catching. This is not good for the visitors and is a microcosm of this season for the men from South America; mistakes and ill-discipline.

.00: Sanchez goes close after some route-one by his forwards. The flyhalf dances through three defenders but is tackled short of the whitewash. It is great defending by Jack Maddocks. The Jaguares went nine phases before Sanchez’s break. much better.

.00: TRY Santiago Cordero! Leonardo Senatore picks and goes, taking Nic Stirzaker with him. The No 8 pops to Sanchez, who then floats a wide pass to the wing, who is over near the corner: 16-8

.00: The conversion is good: 16-10

.00: MISS! Hodge misses his first kick of the night, pushing his attempt wide: 16-10

.00: Amanaki Mafi makes a break and starts another attack. Another silly penalty gives Hodge a chance to make amends for his earlier miss.

.00: PENALTY! The centre extends the Rebels’ lead: 19-10

.00: Mafi is penalised for not rolling away. Colby Fainga’a is pleading with the ref, but Sanchez will kick to the corner.

.00: Lopeti Timani is penalised for pulling down the rolling maul; Sanchez kicks again, and we will repeat the previous play.

.00: The hooter sounded, the Jaguares drive forwards, but the maul goes down. No penalty. The visitors break blind, are stopped short and the referee blows for a scrum. The Rebels cheer and pat themselves on the back because there is no time for the set piece.

The half-time score was Rebels 19 Jaguares 10

.00: BEEP! BEEP! We are back underway at AAMI Park in Melbourne for the second-half.

.00: Jackson Garden-Bachop’s kick is charged down. The play is messy, as the rebels try clear their lines. Leonardo Senatore is penalised – again – and really, should be in the bin.

.00: The Jaguares get their hands on the ball and win a penalty at the breakdown; that’s the fifth penalty to the visitors, although, they have conceded eight.

.00: Another penalty, this time, Amanaki Mafi coming into the maul at the side.

.00: PENALTY! Sanchez reduces the deficit to six points: 19-13

.00: Senatore makes a break down the short side. The ball is offloaded to Emiliano Boffelli, but the winger loses the ball in the tackle that came from behind.

.00: Amazing defence by the Rebels. The Jaguares go 12 phases, battering the home team’s try-line. The visitors profited from a knock on that was not spotted by the officials. Three attempts, on the Rebels’ line, were repelled, before eventually, the South Americans ran out of ideas and patience, losing the ball as they were swamped at the breakdown.

.00: Mafi with some great work, winning his side a penalty and allowing the chance to clear their lines. Hodge will take a shot from 55 metres out.

.00: PENALTY! Hodge hits a monster kick, from inside his own half, to give his team some breathing room: 22-13

.00: INTERCEPT! Jack Maddocks saves a certain try with an intercept on his try line.

.00: TRY Guido Petti! A loose pass by the Rebels is collected by Sanchez. The flyhalf bursts up the field is tackled, but he manages to get the ball away to Petti, who strolls in for the score: 22-18

.00: The standoff slots the wide kick and the deficit is now only two points: 22-20

.00: Hodge makes a beautiful break, accelerates and tries to offload to Maddocks. Somehow, Cordero gets back and tackles the fullback, saving the day for his team.

.00: The game has entered the final quarter; the Rebels are starting to make lots of mistakes, compounding them with ill-discipline. The visitors have a scrum on their host’s 22.

.00: TRY Gonzalo Bertranou! The replacement scrumhalf breaks to the open side, cuts inside, is tackled, but not held, gets up and scores: 22-25

.00: MISS! Juan Martin Hernández misses the simple conversion: 22-25

.00: A miscommunication in the midfield and some good defending by Hodge, sees Matias Orlando lose the ball forwards. Time is ticking down in Melbourne.

.00: TRY! Cordero at the double! The winger collects a pass, after Juan Martin Hernández’s cross-kick, and strolls over the try line for the Jaguares’ fourth try of the match: 22-30

.00: Juan Martin Hernández adds the extras: 22-32

.00: The Rebels, finally, get some go-forward in the Jaguares’ 22. they are going through multiple phases, but cannot break the visitor’s defence.

.00: Eventually, they lose the ball after eight phases; they just ran out of steam – and ideas.

.00: The hooter sounds.

.00: TRY Steve Cummins! The lock scores his first try of the season with the second to last play of the 2017 campaign.

.00: The conversion is good from Ben Meehan, but not good enough for the win: 29-32
