The Melbourne Rebels have played the Reds 17 times in Super Rugby since 2011, the Rebels have won 7 matches and lost 10.

The Rebels’ 7 wins out of 17 matches give them a record of winning 41% of their games against the Reds regardless of venue.

  • The Rebels have won five of their last seven Super Rugby games against the Reds, including their previous two on the bounce; they have never won more than two consecutive games against the Queensland side.
  • The Rebels have won only one of their nine Super Rugby games in New South Wales (L8) and have lost their last three games in the state by an average margin of 18 points per game.
  • After their opening-round victory, the Reds will be hunting for back-to-back wins against Australian opposition in Super Rugby for the first time since May 2015 – which included a 46-29 win over the Rebels.
  • Melbourne have scored the opening try of the game in five of their last eight Super Rugby meetings against Queensland, after having never previously done so.
  • Tate McDermott has been directly involved in 11 tries in his last five starts for the Reds (6 tries, 5 assists); although, he is yet to be directly involved in a try against the Victorians.
  • Queensland has not beaten the Rebels since 2018.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

In the meantime, why not have a look at the match preview.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at Brookvale Oval in Sydney.

3.00: A little bit of rain has made the conditions greasy, but nothing the players should worry too much about. The Rebels win a penalty and kick to the corner.

4.00: Taniela Tupou is offside; the Rebels kick to the corner again.

5.00: Jordan Uelese, the Rebels hooker, throws skew; he threw a few, last weekend and has started poorly in Sydney.

6.00: Tupou is caught offside again. Dave Wessels’ men don’t seem to have an idea of what they want to do. Last weekend, they altered between taking shots at goal or going to the lineout, and they are doing so again.

7.00: PENALTY! Matt To’omua opens the scoring. 3-0

9.00: James O’Connor, whose error led to the Toomua penalty, combines with Filipo Daugunu, but the winger knocks on.

10.00: Michael Stolberg is offside at the ruck. The Reds kickt to the 22.

11.00: Richard Hardwick wins the Rebels a reprieve after Brandon Paenga-Amosa is isolated near the touchline. Uelese with another wayward throw sees the Reds win possession and attack inside the opposition’s 22.

12.00: Andrew Kellaway clears his team’s lines.

13.00: Another penalty at the ruck, this time for holding goes against Melbourne. Queensland kick to the corner.

15.00: Both lineouts are struggling with conditions, this time Paenga-Amosa throws one skew and one is stolen, killing two promising attacks.

16.00: Scrum to the Rebels after another misthrow from Paenga-Amosa. Jeez, this is horrible. Free-kick to Melbourne, who went to early.

20.00: The Reds go 11 phases, the longest attack of the game, but knock on as they enter the Rebels’ 22.

23.00: Another series of errors by Tupou (one a scrum-penalty, the other a knock-on following the ball not being kicked into touch) leads to a scrum inside the Reds’ half.

26.00: Melbourne goes close, but are kept out illegally by Fraser McReight. Rebels come again.

27.00: Melbourne pays for not taking the points. O’Connor makes a big tackle on his line, holding up the attacker for a goal-line drop-out.

28.00: MISS! To’omua misses a drop-kick. 3-0

30.00: Rebels have a defensive scrum inside their 22. Toomua clears, relieving the pressure.

32.00: It;’s the two hookers again, this time Paenga-Amosa overthrows and Uelese knocks on. This is the worst two hooker displays I’ve seen in years, maybe ever.

33.00: Big scrum by the Reds sees them win another penalty, which they kick to the corner.

35.00: Get these two hookers off the field, their play is the worst in living memory. As for the captaincy: KICK AT GOAL!

38.00: Rebels attacking inside the Reds’ 22, expecting another handling error, here.

41.00: NO TRY! Hardwick thinks he’s scored in the corner, but his foot was on the chalk. 3-0

41.00: YELLOW CARD! Hamish Stewart is sent to the bin for a cynical act after his tackle, which slowed down the attack for the Rebels. 3-0

44.00: TRY! FINALLY! Filipo Daugunu steps inside his man dives over in the corner for the game’s first try and the Reds’ first points. 6-5

45.00: MISS! O’Connor, taking over the kicking duties from Hegarty, slips his kick wide. 6-5

60.00: Rebels are 10 metres out. The Reds regain possession after a knock-on by Melbourne.

63.00: More poor lineout skills as possession changes hands, quickly. The Reds pack has been dominant, but they cannot hang on to the ball. Every attack ends with a mistake.

75.00: Melbourne has conceded nine of the last 10 penalties and still have 15 players on the paddock: What’s going on with the officiating?

75.00: PENALTY! O’CONNER lands the easy penalty from in front. 18-11

78.00: Reds win a penalty and boot the ball to the Rebels’ 22.

79.00: Reds lose their throw, and with that, the game looks lost.
