Rebels beat Sunwolves in Melbourne




The Rebels play the Sunwolves in the second match on Friday.

It is the third-ever meeting between the two Super Rugby sides but the first game in Melbourne.

Both matches have been won by the Rebels, in Tokyo and Singapore.

12.00: A huge hit by Koroibete on Jason Emery ends in a penalty for the visitors after a series of several turnovers and counter-attacks.

17.00: TRY! Jack Maddocks runs a good line and speeds away under the posts for his seventh try of the season. 12-7

20.00: The Rebels have started to dominate the contact areas and are getting quick ball, wide to their back three. Sunwolves are under the pump.

21.00: Thirteen phases and a long series of play ends with a penalty to the home team. Hodge kicks to the corner.

21.00: TRY! They take the lineout quickly and drive towards the whitewash. Several pick-and-drives later, and Amanaki Mafi crashes over. 19-7

23.00: CONVERSION! Hodge slots the touchline kick to extend his side’s lead. 21-7

26.00: The Sunwolves are looking to hit back; they’re enjoying some good territory but need to keep their composure inside the Rebels 22.

27.00: They knock on. Boy.

30.00: The away team wins a penalty after some good work by Ed Quirk at the ruck. They opt for posts from 40 metres out.

32.00: PENALTY! Was there any doubt? Parker makes the kick. 21-10

33.00: Tom English’s poor pass is gathered by the Sunwolves, who counter-attack into the Melbourne 22. Grant Hattingh carried a few steps too far before offloading to Lemeki. the winger is swallowed up and tackled into touch.

35.00: Superb work by the Rebels. They hold up the Sunwolves and get the scrum feed.

37.00: The Sunwolves win the turnover after a sloppy Rebels pass goes to ground. They take the ball forward, winning a penalty on the halfway line.

38.00: Hodge is pinged for playing the ball off his feet. It is near his goal-line but he is not warned. Parker calls for the tee.

39.00: PENALTY! Parker will not miss from there. 21-13

40.00: Oh dear! The Sunwolves, looking to run out the clock, knock on at the breakdown, allowing the Rebels the last attack before halftime.

41.00: A frenetic ending to the half. The Rebels went through the phases but lost the ball in contact on the goal-line. Parker tried a little grubber from behind his try-line which was charged down. Insane!

41.00: PEEEEP! Hodge restarts the second half. 

44.00: Hodge runs across, allowing the defenders to close in on the outside runner which leads to a knock on.

48.00: TRY! Maddocks has another. It is a superb finish after some good handling by the backs. It’s his fifth against the Sunwolves this season after a hattrick in the first game. 26-13

49.00: CONVERSION! Hodge kicks his fourth from the sideline. 28-13

53.00: Hosea Saumaki dances his way past the Aussie defenders and races towards the try-line. Somehow, the Rebels get back to defend, tackling the big winger into touch.

54.00: The Rebels are penalised for jumping across the lineout. Parker kicks to the corner.

55.00: The Sunwolves go close with some pick-and-goes. They spread the ball wide, but Michael Little throws the ball into touch.

58.00: The Sunwolves are struggling to break the Rebels resistance.

62.00: The visitors are going through the phases and enjoying possession near halfway.

63.00: Meakes breaks through after a turnover. He pops a pass out the back door to the supporting Angus Cottrell who is tackled by Lemeki. The ball is lost and the Sunwolves clear. Wait, a penalty for cynical play.

63.00: YELLOW CARD! Lemeki is off because he was in an offside position when he played the ball after making the tackle.

66.00: The home team want a scrum. It is reset.

68.00: TRY! Koroibete at the double. Mafi went to the right, opening up the field to the left. The Rebels shift the ball through the hands and get the winger away with nobody in front to stop him getting his third career double. 33-13

69.00: MISS! Hodge can’t add the extras. 33-13

71.00: TRY! Koroibete has a hat-trick! The winger collects the ball with support in numbers everywhere. He throws a dummy and cuts inside, beating the cover tackle and scores. 38-13

72.00: CONVERSION! Hodge extends with a routine kick. 40-13

76.00: The home team want more, but they are denied.

78.00: Lemeki goes close again but is smoked by Sefa Naivalu. The Tongan Godzilla versus the Fijian Flyer! Wow!

80.00: The visitors have one last attack.

83.00: The Rebels withstand a late seven-phase attack and send the ball into touch.
