Reds beat Cheetahs in Bloemfontein

This match preview was one that we were dreading because these two teams bounce from winning form to losing form week by week.

 

Normally these two make up the also rans but this year has been different.

At times the Reds have been giant killers and the Cheetahs have also upset the odds.


Match detail


We are waiting for the kick off.

 

The match is underway.

 

2.00: The Reds give away a scrum penalty so the Cheetahs get the first shot at the posts.

 

3.00: Meyer Bosman takes the shot and nails it from just inside the half way line.

 

6.00: The Reds get a penalty this time so Quade Cooper takes the kick and misses from well out.

 

10.00: The Reds attack the Cheetahs and Cooper finds a gap. The Cheetahs stop the first wave but the Reds keep the ball alive and Will Genia darts through and scores the first try.

 

12.00: Cooper misses the conversion.

 

14.00: The Cheetahs get the overlap and Bjorn Basson who was a late replacement for Jongi Nokwe has a run down the line but they get pushed into touch.

 

18.00: The Reds have a scrum in their half. They win the scrum and Cooper boots the ball downfield. The ball goes straight to the Cheetahs backline so they counterattack. Basson has another chance on the wing but again the ball goes into touch.

 

20.00: Brando Va’aulu gives a penalty away for tackling in the air. Bosman takes the kick but misses.

 

21.00: The Reds run the ball at pace back at the Cheetahs but Morahan gets caught.

 

25.00: Cooper puts in a beauty of a territorial kick and chases it but as the Cheetahs go on and attack after recovering the ball Cooper puts his foot out and trips the player earning him a yellow card. 3-5 is the score now.

 

30.00: Ashley Johnson goes high in a tackle on Wiull Genia so the Reds get a penalty. Genia himself takes the penalty and nails it.

 

31.00: The Cheetahs get a penalty from quick tap and they take it quickly. They run it close but cant get the ball down.

 

32.00: The Cheetahs fire off the back of the scrum and this time Ashley Johnson darts over the line through a big gap. Naas Olivier nails the conversion.

 

36.00: Quade Cooper comes back on.

 

37.00: The Reds give away a penalty at the scrum in the Cheetahs 25. The Cheetahs then boot the ball away.

 

40.00: As the half comes to an end the Reds get a penalty so Cooper takes the kick and nails it taking the lead.

 

The half time score is Cheetahs 10 Reds 11

 

The second half is underway. The Reds have changed Ben Daley for  Greg Holmes in the front row.

 

41.00: Danwel Demas gives away a penalty for a high tackle so the Reds go for the line out which they lose.

 

42.00: The Reds get another penalty this time in front of the posts. Cooper takes the kick and nails it.

 

43.00: It starts to rain.

 

45.00: The Reds break down the wing. They get the overlap on the other side but they get called back as they change sides. The Reds go again and Peter Hynes shrugs off three tackles and scores under the posts.

 

47.00: Quade Cooper nails the conversion.

 

48.00: The Reds get caught offguard in their 25. They give away a penalty and the Cheetahs take the quick tap and drive over the line. We go upstairs to check. No try.

 

50.00: The Cheetahs get a 5m attacking scrum. They win the scrum and get over the line but knock on.

 

52.00: The Cheetahs run the ball at the Reds about 25m out but the ball gets lost in the tackle.

 

55.00: The Reds work the ball back into the Cheetahs half.

 

56.00: The Reds start to go forward but give away a penalty at the breakdown. The Cheetahs clear the ball.

 

58.00: Quade Cooper finds a gap in the Cheetahs line and takes Genia with him. They recycle and the Cheetahs catch up. They go through the phases but after 9 phases the Cheetahs turn it over and attack.

 

60.00: The Cheetahs win a penalty after running it past the half way line.

 

61.00: Laurie Weeks comes off in pain for the Reds and Ben Daley comes back on.

 

63.00: The Cheetahs win a penalty and take the quick tap. Basson goes over but the Reds get the ball and after a couple of passes Will Chambers takes the ball well downfield and then gives away a penalty for hands in the ruck after the recycle. The ball however is far safer for the Reds that where it was when they started.

 

65.00: The Cheetahs win a penalty but instead of going for posts they go for the line out and Tewus de Bruyn kicks it out too far.

 

67.00: The Reds get the ball into the Cheetahs half. As they win the line out they knock on.

 

71.00: The Reds get to about 10 m out. The drive for the line. Cooper takes them to within a metre and then  Jake Schatz goes over but gets held up.

 

73.00: After battling away at the Cheetahs defence for the last five minutes the Reds win a penalty and they choose to kick for posts. Cooper nails the kick and the Reds lead comfortably by 14 points.

 

76.00: The Reds are winding down the clock by playing the ball in the Cheetahs half. The Reds kick the ball behind the defence and Ashley Johnson fumbles the ball behind the line but regathers just in time to prevent a try.

 

78.00: The Cheetahs give away a penalty so Genia takes the quick tap and passes to Digby Ioane who scores the third try. Cooper adds the conversion.

 

80.00: The Cheetahs keep the ball alive after the hooter sounds. They look for a consolation try. They get shoved into touch.

 

That’s it the Reds win.
