Reds beat Highlanders in Brisbane

Where did it go wrong for the Reds ? They are now in seventh place and are clinging to the faint hope of reaching the play offs.

Three weeks ago they were looking strong after beating the Bulls and Stormers but then then wheels started to come off. In their last six matches the Reds have won three and lost three and their last two have ended in defeat.

We are waiting for the kick off.


1.00: The Reds get the perfect start scoring a try almost from the kick off as Peter Hynes shows some pace and passes to Digby Ioane who scores.


2.00: Quade Cooper nails the conversion.


6.00: The Highlanders are awarded a penalty so Israel Dagg takes the kick and nails it.


8.00: The Reds come close to scoring again as they apply pressure in the Highlanders 25. As they recycle the Highlanders give away a penalty. The Reds kick for touch instead of going for posts.


10.00: The Reds pile on the pressure and get to within a metre. They win a penalty and go again. They change sides and Radike Samo gets tackled but stretches and reaches and scores !!


11.00: Quade Cooper takes the conversion and misses from almost the touch line.


15.00: The Reds are keeping the Highlanders under pressure in their 25. The Highlanders turn the ball over and then Cowan boots it out.


18.00: Penalty to the Reds. Genia takes it quickly, they swing the ball at pace, Cooper dazzles with a backhanded pass to Hynes who darts in and scores !! Houston had a part in that too.


19.00: Cooper takes the conversion and slices it across the face of the posts.


21.00: The Highlanders get a penalty so they slow the match down and kick for touch. 71 per cent possession to the Reds so far.


23.00: The Highlanders make a break down the wing but Ben Smith just stumbles into touch short.


27.00: The Highlanders are staring to throw the ball around more and and are running more. A quick battle of the territorial boot is won by the Reds.


28.00: Samo breaks through for the Reds which gets the Highlanders on the backfoot. They recycle and switch sides but the ball is turned over. The Highlanders boot the ball and the kick is charged down.  


32.00: The Reds work the ball around through 7 phases and then on the eighth phase Cooper kicks up and to the corner for Ben Lucas who catches and goes over but can’t get the ball down.


34.00: The Reds again work the ball into the Highlanders 25. Cooper goes for the line himself and gets close – we go upstairs. Replays show he grounded the ball JUST on the tryline. It’s a try !! A bonus point try.


35.00: Cooper converts his own try.


36.00:WOW – a HUGE team fight busts out. There are punches all over ! Clusters of punches too. There was an eye gouge in there. Van Humphries is sent to the bin for retaliation. Highlanders kick for touch. Replays show Jimmy Cowan tried to eye gouge Van Humphries – but not as bad as Schalk Burger in the Lions last year.


38.00: Dagg reads the Reds territorial play perfectly and then boots the ball downfield and sets up a line out.


39.00: The Highlanders win the line out and set up the maul. Somehow the Reds turn it over and boot it out as the siren goes for half time.


The half time score is Reds 24 Highlanders 3


The second half is underway.


The Highlanders get the perfect start as the Highlanders spread the ball wide and Israel Dagg chips over the Reds defence and chases and scores!!


42.00: Dagg’s conversion hits the posts and bounces out.


44.00: The Reds push the Highlanders back into their half with 14 men.


46.00: The Reds knock on and the Highlanders win a scrum. They win the scrum and run it. Vainikolo chip kicks and chases but Genia gets back and saves the try.


48.00: Cooper makes a break and passes to Hynes but the ball is knocked on.


51.00: Ben Smith of the Highlanders slices through the Reds defence in centre field. They keep the ball moving forward. Vainikolo gets them closer and then as they recycle King pops over and scores !! We go upstairs to check.


53.00: Israel Dagg adds the conversion.


55.00: The Highlanders (Smith again) slice through the defence again and they change sides and then after a couple of recycles they pass to Fetu’u Vainikolo who scores in the corner !!


57.00: Israel Dagg nails the conversion and the Highlanders are right back in this.


58.00: The Reds hit back and run the ball into the Highlanders 25. They recycle and the Highlanders turn it over. Vainikolo breaks out but gets caught. They change sides and continue the attack. Bekhuis almost puts  Soakai away for a try but the ball goes out.


61.00: Cooper tries to turn things around for the Reds and gets a bit fancy and loses the ball forward.


62.00: The Highlanders are all over the Reds. They keep opening up the defence and this time Fetu’u Vainikolo busts through and scores!! Highlanders lead for the first time.


64.00: Israel Dagg adds the conversion.


66.00: The Reds just can’t seem to get their hands on the ball. Highlanders 2nd half possesion is up to 65 perc ent to the Highlanders.


68.00; The Reds hit back with a try after some fancy play by Cooper and Poutasi Luafutu scores!! Quade Cooper adds the conversion. Reds lead again.


71.00: The Highlanders are throwing plenty into their attack at the Reds. They get up to the 5m line. They keep the ball alive – Dagg gets to 1m out. They go again so we go upstairs. It’s a try !! Jason Rutledge is the try scorer – he got the ball on to the pad on the post.


72.00: Israel Dagg adds the conversion and the Highlanders lead again.


73.00: The Reds hit back by running the ball into the Highlanders 25. The Highlanders defence is structured well and they turn the ball over and boot it out.


75.00: The Reds comes close to scoring again. They get to the 5m line. They put together 8 phases and then a knock on goes in – the Highlanders boot the ball out and the Reds have to attack all over again.


76.00: The Reds win a penalty on the 25m line. They kick for touch.


78.00: The Reds win the line out and set up the maul. They get it rolling and it drives over the line and the Reds score !! It’s Luafutu again !


78.00: Quade Cooper takes the conversion and nails it taking the lead.


79.00: The Highlanders have the ball and they are keeping it alive.


80.04: The siren goes for full time. The Highlanders keep the ball alive and on attack. The Highlanders win a penalty. It’s a long way out. Dagg will kick for posts. It’s short. The Reds kick it out thats it – the Reds win.
