Luckless Reds lock Hugh McMeniman will miss at least two weeks of rugby – and potentially more – after injuring his right ankle in Saturday’s loss to the Crusaders.

McMeniman was stretchered off Jade Stadium in the final stages of the Super 14 match, as the Crusaders were closing out a 33-22 victory in the second round encounter.

Coach Eddie Jones said x-rays cleared McMeniman of any fracture, but he would have to await further examination back in Brisbane to determine the extent of any ligament damage.

“At this stage he’ll miss a minimum two weeks and hopefully a maximum six,” Jones said, as the team was preparing to leave Christchurch for home.

It’s a bitter blow for Jones and McMeniman, who was one of the Reds’ best against the Crusaders, both in the lineout and in open play and the big man had been regaining top form since last year’s injury-disrupted season with shoulder and neck problems.

Jones was also deeply disappointed by his team’s inability to secure a rare win at Jade Stadium, after they’d fought back courageously from 14 points down to lead 22-21 with 20 minutes to go.

He said the Reds had scored enough points to win the game but missed too many first-up tackles to defeat the Crusaders.

The Reds’ next engagement is against the ACT Brumbies at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane next Saturday.
