Reds winger Digby Ioane will fly home from South Africa after fracturing a finger in the weekend Investec Super 14 match against the Sharks in Durban and could be sidelined for up to six weeks.

The injury to the ring finger on Ioane’s right hand occurred with his first touch of the ball after he had come onto the field as a 53rd minute replacement, in his first game back after serving out a three match suspension for dangerous play.

‘We initially thought it was a dislocation but later x-rays showed it was fractured in two places,’ QR Reds Head Coach Phil Mooney said.

Scrumhalf Genia flew to South Africa last week as a precaution when captain Sam Cordingley went down with a calf injury and Mooney said Genia would now take Ioane’s spot in the tour party rather than returning home as initially planned.

‘With only one match remaining (against the Cheetahs) we won’t seek a replacement. Instead we’ll keep Will with us as an additional halfback,’ Mooney said.

The QR Reds medical staff said Ioane’s injury would normally mean up to six weeks out of football, however they would await a specialist’s report before making a more definite call.
