Reds upset Jaguares with rare away win

The Reds upset the Jaguares 7-18 at Estadio Jose Amalfitani, Buenos Aires with a defensive performance for the ages.

This was the first time in five years that the Queensland franchise has won three games on the bounce.

It was the Reds’ second win away in their last 21 matches on foreign soil.

The famous Argentinian scrum was dominated by the Reds, who won several penalties at the set-piece.

The Jaguares took an early 7-3 lead inside nine minutes, but that was as good as it got.

James Tuttle kicked an early penalty to put the Reds in front, but the Jaguares hit back with a well-worked try on seven minutes.

Bautista Delguy took Santiago Iglesias’ inside shoulder ball and went through the gap to score his fourth try in five matches. 

The home team had 16 handling errors, 25 turnovers and lost multiple lineouts with Agustin Creevy missing his jumpers.

The Queenslanders took a hold of the game with tries, either side of half-time, by Brandon Paenga-Amosa and Filipo Daugunu.

Paenga-Amosa crashed over on 28 minutes after a driving maul to put the Reds back in front.

Tuttle kicked his second penalty four minutes before the break to make it 7-11.

The Jaguares came out firing after the interval, but they could not cross the whitewash.

Instead, it was the Reds who scored after a wonderful attacking move in midfield.

Caleb Timu made a break in the midfield, raced 40 metres before passing to Samu Kerevi, on his inside.

Kerevi played Chris Feauai-Sautia, who passed to the winger, in support.

Daugunu beat Delguy’s tackle and was in for the score and the last point of the game.

Tuttle added the extras to extend the Aussie’s lead to 11 points.

The home team had several opportunities to chip away at the Reds’ lead, but they never took the points on offer.

Instead, they kicked to the corner, either losing the lineout or making a handling error in contact, close to the goal-line.

The Jaguares laid siege to the Reds goal-line but could not breach the red-brick wall.

Juan Martin Hernandez looked to have scored with half-an-hour to play, but after a TMO referral, the try was not awarded.

Far too many lineouts were lost and the Jaguares’ short runners kept getting in each other’s way.

Joaquin Tuculet and Santiago Iglesias went close before the end

A massive tackle by Hamish Stewart and Ben Lucas on Juan Manuel Leguizamon saved a try with less than four minutes remaining.

The Australians defended the driving maul, expertly, frustrating the home team, who consequently, lost their heads and the match.
