The Queensland Reds are undefeated in their last five Super Rugby home matches against the Blues (W4, D1), despite trailing at halftime on the day in each of the last three games in that span.

The Reds will be aiming for back-to-back wins over New Zealand teams in Super Rugby for the first time since April 2013, following their 40-34 victory over the Chiefs last time out.

  • Each of the Blues’ last two Super Rugby matches in Australia has been decided by a double-figure margin on the day (W2), after doing so only once in their eight such fixtures prior (W5, D1, L2).
  • The Blues have scored 40 points in the third quarter of their games in Super Rugby Trans-Tasman, the most of any team; in addition, they are the only side to have conceded zero points during this period.
  • Liam Wright (Queensland Reds) has won seven turnovers in the 2021 Super Rugby Trans-Tasman campaign, the most of any player in the competition.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

In the meantime, why not have a look at the match preview.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Brisbane, Queensland.

3.00: Both teams go close in the opening stages, but handling errors keep the scoreboard at zero.

5.00: Hamish Stewart starts at standoff in a late change for James O’Connor, who has a neck injury. Mac Grealy makes his debut at fullback in place of Bryce Hegarty (hamstring), and Joshua Flook comes onto the bench.

8.00: This has the makings of a good game. The Reds, despite the changes, are flooding the breakdown, winning the kicking game, and making turnovers. The Blues are slipping tackles and making mistakes.

10.00: The Reds are on the front foot, they are winning the battle on the gain-line as the Blues slip tackles.

11.00: The Blues win a penalty on the Reds’ line because Hamish Stewart did not use his arms in the tackle.

12.00: PENALTY! Otere Black, kicking at 79% this season, opens the scoring. 0-3

15.00: The Reds are looking dangerous in the wide channels, they are playing hot potato with the ball, and finding the spaces; it’s good stuff from Brad Thorn’s men.

16.00: Early problems with the two front rows mean the ref has to talk to the big men.

18.00: Zarn Sullivan’s break from his half leads to Bryce Heem running over Filipo Daugunu. Heem flipped a pass to Sullivan, but the fullback is tackled into touch. That was poor from Hunter Paisami, who jumped out of the line to kickstart the Blues’ attack.

20.00: Brandon Paenga-Amosa has made three strong carries, two in the wide channels, the Blues are struggling to stop him.

21.00: TRY! Hunter Paisami puts Harry Wilson through a tiny gap between two forwards, and the No. 8 races away to score. Hunter Paisami’s pass looked forward on replay, but the ref and TMO do not call it. 5-3

22.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 7-3

26.00: YELLOW CARD! Brandon Paenga-Amosa collapses a driving maul near his try line and is sent to the bin. 7-3

27.00: Another collapsed maul sees the ref call Liam Wright and warn him about another yellow card and/or penalty try.

27.00: TRY! Dalton Papalii crashes over from close range following a few attacks on the Reds’ try line. 7-8

28.00: CONVERSION! Black adds the extras. 7-10

30.00: The Reds’ ill-discipline is letting them down at the moment, and it’s allowing the Blues to set up camp near the goal line.

32.00: Superb defending by the Reds to win the turnover on their line.

34.00: The Blues are hammering away at the Reds line, they have found some mojo and are looking to capitalise on their numerical and scoreboard advantage.

35.00: TRY! Josh Nasser shoots the line, which allows Mark Telea to cut inside and run away to score under the posts. 7-15

36.00: CONVERSION! Black adds the extras. 7-17

38.00: Paenga-Amosa’s yellow card cost the Reds 14 points, and has changed the complection of this contest. Thorn’s men are starting to miss tackles (13 so far).

40.00: More hot potato from Queensland as they look to stretch the Blues, but the Kiwis are making the tackles, and have all 15 players on the field, unlike last weekend when the Chiefs played with 13, and the Reds wreaked havoc.

41.00: A knock-on by the Blues gives the Reds the last chance at points because Thorn’s men win a penalty after Akira Ioane does not roll away.

42.00: MISS! Isaac Henry pushes his kick wide of the posts. 7-17

The halftime score was Queensland Reds 7 Blues 17

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.

44.00: TRY! Patrick Tuipulotu crashes over after the Blues went 19 phases from a stolen lineout inside the Reds’ 22. Telea should have scored, but he did not pass to an open Bryce Heem, who must be raging; however, all’s well, that ends well. 7-22

45.00: CONVERSION! Black adds the two. 7-24

48.00: Reds win a penalty and opt to a scrum near the Blues’ poles.

49.00: TRY! Paenga-Amosa picks up a loose ball that squirted out of a ruck on the Blues’ line, and flops on the ball for the score. The TMO ruled the try was legit but the replay shows the ball come out forward. Another lucky score for the hosts. 12-24

50.00: CONVERSION! Henry adds the extras. 14-24

53.00: The Blues have the Reds scrambling on their line.

54.00: TRY! Finlay Christie darts around the ruck to score. 14-29

55.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 14-31

59.00: The Reds are all over the Blues, but they cannot make all their territory and possession count. The Blues are defending the maul very well.

61.00: More pressure from the Reds as they camp inside the opposition’s 22.

62.00: Another lost lineout gives the Blues a reprieve.

67.00: The Reds are battering the Blues’ line, but still cannot find a way over.

70.00: Reds scrum under the Blues’ posts.

71.00: TRY! Filipo Daugunu snaps a crossfield kick-pass out of the air to score. 19-31

72.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 21-31

76.00: The Blues look to have the game in the bag.

80.00: PENALTY! Filipo Daugunu slots a long-range kick. 24-31

81.00: The hooter sounds, the Blues steal the ball, and clear for another win.
