Chiefs beat Reds in Brisbane

on

The second Super rugby match on Saturday is in Brisbane where the Reds host the Chiefs, hoping to end a three-match losing streak to the men from Waikato.

The Reds have not beaten the Chiefs since 2013 as the last three matches have all been won by the Chiefs and that includes the last two matches in Brisbane.

  • The Chiefs have won their last three games against the Queenslanders, outscoring them 120-25 in that time.
  • The Reds have lost their last eight games against New Zealand opposition, their last such victory coming against the Highlanders in April 2016.
  • The Chiefs lost to the Hurricanes last time out but have not lost back to back regular season games since May 2015.
  • James Tuttle has landed 10/10 penalty goals this season, no player has landed as many without missing at least one.
  • Solomona Alaimalo tops the charts for metres made (683) and clean breaks (24) this season whilst no one has beaten more defenders than Damian McKenzie (42, also Akira Ioane).

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway in Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium.

3.00: We have the first scrum of the game, and it’s a good one by the Chiefs.

5.00: Aidan Toua clears a good kick to the Reds’ 10m.

6.00: Ben Lucas is offsides at the lineout. Damian McKenzie will take a shot at goal from a wide angle.

7.00: PENALTY! McKenzie puts the Chiefs on the scoreboard. 0-3

9.00: McKenzie knocks on after Charlie Ngatai’s mini-break. The Reds are halting the chiefs but we will see how long they can withstand the Kiwis’ attack.

12.00: The Queenslanders are caught offsides after coughing up a chance at a turnover. The Chiefs are getting quick ball from the rucks and are looking to go wide. McKenzie kicks to touch.

13.00: TRY! Tyler Ardron, with a pick-and-go, dives over the try-line for his second Super Rugby score. 0-8

14.00: CONVERSION! McKenzie won’t miss from in front. 0-10

16.00: Solomon Alaimalo is over after McKenzie’s midfield break, but he loses the ball forwards in the act of grounding. Big let-off for the home team, but they look ragged in broken play.

17.00: TRY! Ngatai strolls over for another score. The Chiefs win a rare tighthead and were camped on the reds line; three phases later, the fullback was in. 0-15

18.00: CONVERSION! McKenzie adds the extras. 0-17

20.00: Samu Kerev knocks on with the Reds in a good attacking position inside the Chiefs’ 22. McKenzie is leaving for an HIA. James slipper is also leaving the field.

22.00: The Reds execution at the advantage line is poor; they keep dropping balls or misplacing their passes.

24.00: There are a couple of reset scrums.

26.00: Izaia Perese wins the turnover, Jono Lance picks up the ball and starts a counter-attack from the Reds’ 22.

28.00: Sean Wainui, tackles Izack Rodda into touch, however, the lock lost the ball forward and so the Chiefs have the scrum.

29.00: TRY! Brodie Retallick scores after three pick and drives by the Chiefs. The speed of the ball at the breakdown is killing the Reds forwards. 0-22

30.00: CONVERSION! Marty McKenzie, on for his brother, slots the kick. 0-24

33.00: The Reds look lethargic. They cannot get any ball and when they do, they cough it up.

34.00: Ardron breaks in midfield, plays a pass to Liam Polwart, but the hooker loses the ball forward, although, the TMO rules the pass is forward. Scrum to the Reds. That is another (irrelevant) let-off.

35.00: Big scrum by the home team, who are rewarded with a scrum-penalty. Lance clears.

37.00: Lance kicks possession away – again. The Reds need to be patient, instead, they kick the ball away after two or three phases. They have hardly had any ball.

38.00: Lucas and Perese try a blindside move, but the winger is tackled into touch. It’s all very one-dynamic by the Queenslanders.

40.00: It’s all gone a bit scrappy with both sides losing possession trying to play with width.

41.00: Yet another pass is misplaced. This time Toua throws above Perese, and into touch.

The half-time score was Reds 0 Chiefs 24

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Australia.

43.00: TRY! Solomon Alaimalo breaks Lance’s tackle and sends Liam Polwart away in the corner. It was set up after Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi saw the space on the left and switched the play. 0-29

44.00: CONVERSION! Marty McKenzie slots the touchline kick. 0-31

45.00: George Smith, the legendary Wallaby openside, is on for his 157th Super Rugby cap in his 14th campaign. openside Liam Wright was three-years-old when Smith made his Super Rugby debut.

47.00: TRY! Samu Kerevi crashes through two Chiefs defenders to score in the corner and get the Reds off their duck. 5-31

48.00: CONVERSION! Lance nails the sideline conversion. 7-31

50.00: Penalty for the Reds after JP Smith wins the battle at the breakdown.

52.00: Johnny Fa’auli absolutely destroys Caleb Timu with a bone-crunching hit. The ref is consulting the TMO for a dangerous tackle. Thank you, Jaco Peyper and Damien Mitchelmore for not sending a man to the bin for a strong, legal tackle. Play on!

53.00: The Chiefs march the Reds scrum backwards, and get the penalty.

55.00: Brad Thorn’s men have had a decent last 10 minutes, with 70 percent possession and are on the attack inside the opposition’s 22.

59.00: Some more sustained attacking possession by the Reds has the Chiefs back-tracking.

63.00: The game is getting a bit scrappy with all the substitutions and the handling errors are not helping.

66.00: The Reds attack from their half, they are still looking to find a way to the whitewash.

68.00: The Reds win another penalty, and Lance kicks to the corner. They need a powerful driving maul to stop this Chiefs’ pack.

69.00: They did it. Caleb Timu scores by placing the ball against the base of the post, but after the TMO and ref consult, the video replay shows the No 8 losing the ball forward. No Try! Scrum, Chiefs.

73.00: It’s been all Queensland since the break, but hey cannot break the Waikato resistance.

75.00: TRY! Finally, the Reds are over. Lance switches play from left to right, playing a long pass to Kerevi. The centre puts on the afterburners and slips the tackles to score. 12-31

76.00: MISS! The kick is wide. 12-31

78.00: Some big hits and cleanouts at the ruck. The Chiefs have a lineout on the opposition’s 22.

83.00: The Chiefs get a penalty and kick to the corner.

85.00: TRY! Samisoni Taukei’aho crashes over for the important bonus-point try after a powerful driving maul.

86.00: MISS! But, it doesn’t matter, the Chiefs have the bonus-point win.

FULL-TIME.
