Crusaders beat Reds in Brisbane

on

The Crusaders have won 19 of their last 22 Super Rugby games against the Queensland Reds (L3), including their last eight on the bounce; they have not lost to the Reds in the competition since the 2011 Final (Reds def. Crusaders, 18-13).

The Queensland Reds have won their last 11 consecutive Super Rugby games on home turf and a 12th straight home win would set a new club record in the competition.

  • The Crusaders succumbed to a 20-12 loss to the NSW Waratahs in Round 6, 2019 in their most recent away game against an Australian team in Super Rugby, snapping a nine-game winning run in such fixtures.
  • The Queensland Reds have scored seven tries from scrums within the opposition 22m zone since the beginning of 2021, the most of any team in Super Rugby competitions in that time.
  • Codie Taylor is set to play his 100th Super Rugby game for the Crusaders; he has won all four of his previous Super Rugby games against the Queensland Reds, scoring one try and making two try assists across those encounters.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kick-off.

In the meantime, why not have a look at the match preview.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Queensland.

2.00: Crusaders under early pressure. The Reds are playing up-tempo, Taniela Tupou almost opened the scoring, but Will Jordan ripped the ball out of the prop’s hands for a goal-line drop-out.

4.00: Mitchell Dunshea knocks on in the tackle, killing a good attacking series by the Kiwis, who stretched the Reds.

7.00: CONVERSION! Mo’unga converts his try. 0-7

10.00: The Reds have recovered well from the early setback, they are playing at tempo and keeping the Crusaders inside their own half.

12.00: TRY! Richie Mo’unga creates a try this time, running from his own half to the Reds’ 22. He slips tackles before drawing the cover defence to send Sevu Reece away. Sensational. 0-12

14.00: Reds are back on the attack.

15.00: TRY! Cullen Grace finishes another counter-attack from deep inside the Crusaders’ half. Tate McDermott’s pass is picked up by David Havilli, who kickstarts the attack. Whetukamokamo Douglas carries to the 22 before sending the supporting Grace away. 0-19

20.00: It’s going to be a long way back for the Reds, they have to be the next team to score.

22.00: The Reds lose possession near the Saders’ line. The visitors – as they do – go the length of the field and almost score but for a last-ditch tackle on their own try line saves their skins.

24.00: Reds survive another long attack when Jordan kicks the ball over the dead-ball line from inside the Reds’ 22. That was strange by the fullback.

25.00: Offside by the Reds, Mo’unga kicks to the corner.

27.00: Superb defending of the driving maul by the Queensland pack, they stop the Saders, and win the turnover.

29.00: TRY! STOP THE COUNT!  It’s the Richie Mo’unga show, the standoff is tearing the Reds apart. Mo’unga collected an overthrown pass, which brought up Bryce Hegarty out of the line. The first-receiver gathered and sped around the fullback, and cruised in for the score. 0-26

34.00: Illegal wheeling by the Saders scrum. O’Connor boots to the 22.

37.00: CONVERSION! O’Connor adds the extras. 7-28

40.00: Mo’unga is isolated, Liam Wright and Harry Wilson slow down the Crusaders before winning a penalty to relieve the pressure – that was close!

41.00: Sevu Reece is pinged for coming around the side of a ruck – Hegarty needs a big kick, here.
