Reds beat Moana Pasifika in Brisbane




This will be the first Super Rugby Pacific match between the Queensland Reds and Moana Pasifika.

The Reds have won six of their last seven matches when facing a team for the first time (L1), including each of their last two – their only defeat was a 22-8 loss to the Jaguares (25 March 2017).

  • The Queensland Reds have lost their last four consecutive Super Rugby Pacific games; the last time they lost more in succession in Super Rugby competitions was a five-game stretch from May to June in 2018.

  • Timoci Tavatavanawai (Moana Pasifika) has made 56 tackle breaks, the most of any player in the competition and 29 more than the Queensland’s best Jordan Petaia (27).

8.00: James O’Connor kicks to the corner, but the Reds lose possession, and the islanders clear the danger.

10.00: TRY! Some good hands by the Reds eventually leads to Jock Campbell crashing over near the corner. 5-7

12.00: MISS! O’Connor cannot convert. 5-7

14.00: TRY! Harry Wilson wins the turnover before Tate McDermott’s cleaver box-grubber is chased down by Josh Flook. There was no one home at the back for Moana. Flook beat the chasing defenders before offloading to the supporting Fraser McReight. 10-7

19.00: YELLOW CARD! Henry Time-Stowers is off for a reckless tip-tackle on Fraser McReight. 12-7

21.00: Willy Havili saves the day, but the ref says the fullback took the ball back over his try line. Scrum for the Reds.

23.00: Seru Uru and Tate McDermott both go close before Harry Hoopert loses the ball over the try line. That is a let off for the islanders.

26.00: TRY! Seru Uru, in the halfback role after McDermott’s carry, pops to Hoopert, who with the help of McReight, crashes through Ray Niuia and Abraham Pole. 17-7

28.00: CONVERSION! O’Conner slots the kick. 19-7

29.00: Moana is awarded a relieving penalty. They can take time off the clock by going for poles.

30.00: PENALTY! Leali’ifano, who made his Test debut in 2013 on this ground versus the British & Irish Lions, adds the three. 19-10

33.00: Moana are just about in this game, they just need to get clinical with ball in hand inside the opposition’s half.

36.00: It’s all Queensland at the minute, Moana Pasifika is reeling.

39.00: TRY! Queensland has another penalty advantage, but they don’t need it. O’Connor knew he had the advanatge, put in a little grubber behind the flat defensive line for the chasing Campbell. Campbell got checked by a defender, but still managed to dot down under pressure. 24-10

46.00: TRY! Piggyback penalties set up Moana on the Reds’ line. Sione Tu’ipulotu broke off the ruck to the right, crashed through McReight to score next to the flag. 24-15

48.00: MISS! Leali’ifano hits the post. 24-15

49.00: McDermott wants three points, O’Connor will take a shot.

50.00: PENALTY! The kick is good. 27-15

53.00: A few stoppages after Moana knocked on when it looked easier to score.

55.00: Mr Cooper has had enought with the home team’s ill discipline. He decides, however, that it’s not time to show a card.

56.00: YELLOW CARD! Matt Faessler is off. 27-15

57.00: Havili’s kick did not go out, but the advantage ends with another penalty against the Reds. This time, Havili’s kick does go out, but not near the 22. That is terrible by the fullback.

58.00: YELLOW CARD! McReight is off for 10 minutes. 27-15

60.00: The Reds win a massive defensive scrum penalty to clear.

64.00: Timoci Tavatavanawai smokes McDermott with a huge hit, the winger might be lucky to get away with one on the halfback.

66.00: Flook is off injured.

68.00: MISS! Lawson Creighton pushes his penalty well wide.

69.00: TRY! Harry Wilson intercepts Leali’ifano’s floated pass and scores under the posts. 32-15

70.00: CONVERSION! The kick is good. 34-15
