Reds beat Stormers in Brisbane

on

The Reds have played the Stormers 19 times in Super Rugby since 1998, winning seven matches and losing 12.

The Reds seven wins give them a record of winning 37% of their matches against the Stormers.

  • The Stormers have won 10 of their last 13 Super Rugby games against the Reds, although they did lose on their most recent trip to Suncorp Stadium (March 2014).
  • The last South African side to beat the Reds in Australia were the Sharks back in 2015, since when the Queensland side has won five such Super Rugby games on the spin.
  • The Stormers have won four of their last five Super Rugby games in Australia; however, their last victory in the country came in July 2016.
  • Robbie Fleck’s team has not won in their last 10 Super Rugby games outside of South Africa while losing 11 of their last 12 away from Newlands.
  • The Reds have scored eight tries in the final quarter of games this season, the joint-most of any team in the competition.
  • Only Rahboni Warren-Vosayaco (76) has made more carries than Reds centre Samu Kerevi (74) this season in Super Rugby, Kerevi playing one game fewer than the Sunwolves backrower.

Match detail

We are waiting for the kickoff.

In the meantime why not have a look at the match preview.

1.00: PEEEEP! We are underway at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane where the Stormers have not won since 2012.

2.00: The conditions are excellent, very dry according to the pitch-side commentator, but that doesn’t stop the Stormers from knocking on. Scrum to the Reds.

4.00: The visitors win their ball from the lineout, but another knock on stops an attack.

5.00: The Stormers are pinged for collapsing the scrum. The Reds kick to the 22.

6.00: A good response by the Cape Town team’s pack, winning the turnover after holding up the Queensland maul.

8.00: Damian de Allende, wearing the No 24 jersey, is penalised for playing the halfback at the breakdown. Bryce Hegarty kicks deep into the Stormers’ half.

10.00: Cobus Wiese coughs up the ball after a good attack from the South Africans. De Allende and Siya Kolisi were involved before the chance was lost.

11.00: The Stormers have a lineout outside their opponent’s 22, however, a sloppy maul is held up by Queensland.

13.00: Free kick to the Reds after an early engagement by the Stormers. Bizarrely, the home team opts for another scrum.

14.00: Tate McDermott breaks to the blind-side, slipping a tackle before Hegarty kicks to the opposition’s 22.

15.00: NO TRY! Filipo Daugunu knocks on a box-kick, setting off a counter-attack. De Allende’s kick is gathered by Damian Willemse, who dots down on the dead-ball line. That was close by the 20-year-old.

16.00: Daugunu leaves the field after his blemish.

18.00: The Stormers cannot hang onto the ball, although, they have gone 10 phases inside the Reds’ 22.

19.00: NO TRY! Sergeal Petersen dives over in the corner after an 11-phase attack, but the winger steps out of play before grounding. Five-metre lineout to the Reds.

Still NIL-NIL

20.00: Samu Kerevi is taken out in the air by Dillyn Leyds, who apologises to the centre. Reds kick into the opposition’s half.

22.00: A high tackle by the visitors leads to another penalty, which is put out on the 5m.

24.00: Another penalty, another kick to the corner, however, this time the Stormers hold up the Reds’ maul, winning the scrum.

26.00: An obstruction by JP Smith kills a Reds’ attack. This game is littered with errors.

28.00: Another knock on by the Stormers. Fleck has his hands over his mouth in the coaches booth, and he is looking forlorn with his charges.

30.00: The Stormers go back after a long period attacking, eventually, another lost ball kills the move and gives the hosts an attacking scrum. There is yet another stoppage for blood.

32.00: Kolisi wins a  penalty for not releasing, allowing them to clear the danger. The Reds have had most of the possession and territory in the last 15 minutes, but the South Africans have defended stoutly.

34.00: Kolisi loses the ball at the base of the driving maul as he tried to transfer the ball back. Scrum, Reds.

35.00: Leyds cleans up Jack Hardy’s grubber. The Reds attacked the wide channel with two cut-out passes to the winger, whose kick was a good idea, but too long.

36.00: Scrum to the Reds because they were going forward.

37.00: BIG SCRUM! Frans Malherbe is pinged for the set-piece infraction giving the home team good attacking position.

38.00: Superb defence again from the Cape Town men, they hold up the maul, which came from a short lineout. It’s a poor call by the Reds.

39.00: It’s the Stormers’ turn to win a scrum-penalty because the Reds collapsed the set piece. This is dull as. The last nil-nil at halftime was back in 2013 between the Sharks and the Stormers.

40.00: YELLOW CARD! Kolisi is sent to the bin. One last chance for Queensland. Nil-Nil

41.00: The Stormers deny the hosts, and that is halftime. Jesus!

The halftime score was Reds ZERO Stormers ZERO

41.00: PEEEEP! We are back underway in Queensland, Australia.

42.00: TRY! Finally, we have a try. Kerevi plays a one-two with Sefa Naivalu before running away to score under the posts. 5-0

43.00: CONVERSION! Hegarty adds the extras. 7-0

45.00: Brad Thorn will be happy with his team’s response to their poor first 40 minutes.

46.00: TRY! McDermott is tackled high after Hegarty’s break, but the Reds recycle the ball and pound the try line before Brandon Paenga-Amosa crashes over for another five-pointer. 12-0

47.00: CONVERSION! Hegarty splits the uprights. 14-0

48.00: Penalty to the Stormers after the Reds infringe at the lineout. Jean-Luc du Plessis kicks to the corner.

50.00: The Stormers bash their way towards the try line and win a penalty for not rolling away. Kolisi is back on the field after a costly yellow card. The skipper calls for a scrum because the Stormers need seven.

51.00: TRY! Kobus van Dyk crashes over after a slick scrum move to the open side. 14-5

52.00: CONVERSION! Du Plessis slots the kick. 14-7

54.00: Willemse claims a mark, but his kick is not out, he went for distance instead of accuracy. The Reds win the scrum after the ruck.

56.00: McDermott was not ready for Kerevi’s offload, although, it was a pass after contact which was not controlled by the centre.

59.00: Kerevi is a one-man show. He tries to go around the outside, and when he runs into some defenders, he passes a low, forward pass to Alex Mafi giving the visitors a scrum on their 22.

60.00: Duncan Paia’aua botches a three on one by dropping the ball.

63.00: The Reds have a scrum inside their 22. The halfbacks push and shove before Queensland win a penalty for a side entry at the next ruck. Hegarty clears to halfway.

66.00: Scott Higginbotham finds a gap with a good angled run. The ball is shifted wide, Hegarty’s grubber was collected by Paia’aua, but he passes to a Stormer, who boots the ball out; however, the Reds have good field position.

67.00: TRY! McDermott catches the Stormers napping, he takes the penalty quickly and darts over for the score. The halfback has been superb along with Kerevi. His night, however, is over as he is substituted. 19-7

68.00: CONVERSION! Hegarty has the ball on a string, tonight. 21-7

70.00: This will be a tall order for Fleck’s men, they have not scored in the last 20 minutes in the past two games and only scored 10 tries this season.

71.00: NO TRY! Kolisi looks to have scored, but he is held up. Scrum to the Stormers on the Reds’ 5m.

73.00: Izack Rodda is caught for accidental offsides after Liam Wright’s miracle work at the breakdown won the turnover. The game is slipping away for the visitors, who have not won at Suncorp in seven years.

74.00: Taniela Tupou is caught offsides after Mafi’s a huge hit on Steven Kitshoff. The ball is put out on the 5m for a lineout. One last throw of the dice?

75.00: TRY! De Allende takes Herschel Jantjies’s sneaky offload, and runs a good angle, spinning out of tackles to score. 21-12

76.00: MISS! SP Marais misses from next to the posts, he looks to have hurt himself, holding a groin and wincing as he runs back for the restart. 21-12

78.00: The Reds go close but the ball is lost forward after contact, however, the hosts had a long penalty advantage, which they come back for. Hegarty calls for the tee for a shot from in front to kill the game.

79.00: PENALTY! Hegarty extends the lead. 24-12

79.00: Oh dear, the restart is kicked out on the full.

81.00: An accidental offside stops the Reds from gaining a bonus-point.
