The chief executive of Canterbury Cricket and a former international cricketer, Richard Reid, has been appointed chief executive of the Otago Rugby Football Union.

Reid, 48, will take over from Russell Gray, who announced his resignation in June after four years at the helm of Otago rugby.

Union chairman Ron Palenski said he was delighted to be able to appoint someone of Reid’s calibre. ‘He comes to Otago with an impressive record in sport, both as a competitor and as an administrator,’ he said.

More than 20 applications were received for the position.

Reid said he was aware of the challenges that modern rugby has caused for unions such as Otago and he was excited by the prospect of rising to them.

A start date has not yet been determined.

Reid has been chief executive of Canterbury Cricket since 2001 after previously being general manager of Nike in New Zealand.
