Boland coach Deon Davids was forced to make a late change to his Kavaliers rugby side for Friday’s Currie Cup match against the Lions at Wellington.

Loosehead prop Janro van Niekerk, who was supposed to frustrate the visitors in the scrums, failed his final, desperate fitness test due to an ankle injury he sustained against Griquas in Kimberley two weeks ago.

“It is a huge disappointment,” team manager Denver Pienaar said.

“Janro felt his ankle was not a 100 percent and that he would let the side down.”

His place now goes to Matie strongman Johan Roets, who will make the starting line-up for the first time. Meanwhile, Boland president Francois Davids had a very positive talk with the team on Thursday morning.

“I told them to prove themselves. If a team arrives at Wellington with big names that will not frighten us. They are as human as we are. Davids told his team they must “go out onto the park and prove yourselves.

“This is the only way for the so-called experts to take note of you.”
