Rugby Championship could be moved to Europe

Rugby Championship administrators Sanzaar are understood to be considering moving the bulk of the rest of the tournament to Europe due to the pandemic related travel restrictions.

Most of the remaining matches in the Rugby Championship were set to be played in Australia but travel restrictions and quarantines look set to prevent matches from going ahead as planned.

Sanzaar are said to be considering four doubleheader matches in Paris, London, Dublin and Cardiff.

The Springboks are playing Argentina in South Africa this weekend but after that all matches could be moved to Europe.

The Rugby Championship fixture list was contingent on the continuation of the travel corridor between Australia and New Zealand but this closed after an increase in covid numbers in New South Wales.

At least four matches that were originally planned to take place in New Zealand were set to be relocated to Perth after new cases of covid were found in New Zealand. However Australian authorities have now blocked any quarantine-free travel between the two neighbouring nations.

The All Blacks are still in New Zealand and had planned to travel to Australia on Sunday which is six days before their next match on 28 August and travel rules now include a 14 day quarantine period so the match cannot go ahead as planned as things stand.

There is also a lack of stadium availability in Australia if the matches are delayed to accomodate the quarantine delay.

Twickenham in London has already hosted a Super rugby match and a Rugby Championship match so if the matches are moved it would not be the first time that Sanzaar matches have been played in Europe.
