Santiago Phelan has quit as the coach of Argentina’s national rugby team who have just completed their second season in the Rugby Championship without a win.
The Argentina Rugby Union have confirmed Phelan’s resignation but have given no reasons for his departure.
Argentina joined the Rugby Championship in 2012 and managed only a draw in six home-and-away matches against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.
This season the team lost all six matches, but went close to scoring upsets at home against No. 2-ranked South Africa and in Perth against Australia.
Argentina – known as the Pumas – is trying to upgrade its rugby profile but has struggled to compete consistently against three of the game’s best national teams.
The Argentina Rugby Union are expected to name a replacement as soon as Tuesday
