SANZAAR Boss Andy Marinos has said that they will not rule out adding a Super Rugby team from the Pacific Islands if the tournament expands again.

Marinos says that the addition of a Pacific Island team is one of their serious considerations and that the idea would be thoroughly assessed.

“SANZAR’s never deliberately ignored the Pacific Islands,” Marinos told TVNZ.

“There’s always been a natural transfer of players into Australia and New Zealand and you are seeing a lot of those guys coming through the system and are playing on a regular basis.”

SANZAAR have appointed Accenture to do a six month review of Super Rugby and one of the considerations is that Super Rugby expands further into new markets.

Marinos said that he did not doubt that a Pacific Island’s team would be competitive if one was added to Super Rugby. The Sanzaar boss added that he feels it would be an attractive addition to Super Rugby.

“It’s going to be a case of modeling and positioning and seeing from a commercial and high performance perspective, how does it stack up and how could it fit into a structure should we look to expand,” Marinos said.

“It’s a continuous process of working through how we can get the best result out of the geographies we are looking at.”

Sanzaar considered adding a Singapore based Pacific Islands team for the current expansion but chose to add the Sunwolves from Japan and the Jaguares from Argentina and Kings from South Africa.
